I think its pretty safe to say all the rumours are just rumours until we offload some deadwood. Supposedly our squad is at the 25 man limit for what we can register, so why would we sign players that we couldn’t register? especially players over the age of 21 who wouldnt currently be able to play.
I very much doubt Lee Charnley is going to bring 3 in and then un-register the likes of obertan and marveax and continue to pay their salary whilst not being able to play a game for us, just doesnt make very good business sense especially when their contracts are expiring at the end of the season.
Unless we can move a few players out we are pretty much full. The only players that can be un-registered at this time are 1) Tim Krul, he is a waste of a space in the squad at this moment in time as he will not play again this season. 2) Curtis Good, Waste of a squad place and injured for an un-specified period of time, un-register the pair and free up some room.
Its my understanding anyone U21 at the start of the season doesn’t take up a space in the 25 man squad so Rolando Aarons, Toney, Sakta, Woodman, Mbabu wouldn’t be taken into consideration. Ive only mentioned these are they are the most likely to feature, some of the younder players shoudnt yet be considered.
I would be looking to move out the following
Mike Williamson - (6 months contract left)
Cisse (doubtful due to injury – may have to wait till the summer)
Goufran - (6 months contract left)
Obertan - (6 months contract left)
    Riviere (sh!te)
    Marveaux- (6 months contract left)
Mbabu (6 months left on his contract, clearly his never going to play, might as well fetch £250k for him now.)
S Taylor - (6 months left on his contract, lets see if one of the Championship clubs will offer us £1m for him and get someone younger/better/less injury prone in.)
Even if we got rid of those 8 players (7 of which take up squad space) and only get 4 in for instance, I’d be happy. None of those players above make more than 10 appearances over the course of the season. Some make less than 5! Free up some wage and get 4 Decent players in who are likely to feature and make our squad more of an actual squad!

The only problem is actually getting rid of some of these player for actual money!

I was going to do a similar thread just before the window naming all those above - bar Mbabu (I think he will get an extension) and Cisse as he's our only forward who can score goals currently (like you say maybe in the summer) but even if we got them off the wage bill it would be progress and we would be able to replace them over the next two windows.

Weren't you due compensation from Krul's injury? £5m or something.

Vic Valdes is still lingering around here somewhere... sort it out.

I've just had to do a double take, but, yes, we have 25 registered players. How the hell have we got such a rubbish, weak squad when it's "the same" size as everyone else's?!!?!

Either way, I've no idea HOW we can bring another player in without - as above - de-registering some of the crud we have. What kind of mess are we in where we need to sell Williamson just to get a new player in. Dear oh dear.

  5. You can just de-register the injured players

I'd bet good money Lee Charnley has no idea you can do that.

Little doubt he knows you can do that. The problem is he won't be thinking of them as players as opposed to salaries. He won't want the additional salaries until he can get rid of some of the other salaries.

We should use this going forward

Whats your first choice salaries for St and CM

Id play that Salary Elliot in goal next game

We need to sell that salary Mike Williamson, because his not giving us value for money.

Some of the players were clearly registered for the sake of it.

Willo seemed to have rediscovered his level whilst on loan, I think championship teams would take him. Marveaux is going nowhere, because the wages he's on cannot be matched by teams that would take him. He will leave on a free at the end of his terms. The same challenge is presented for Obertan, Rivière, Gouffran, and to a lesser extent Cisse.

As said above, I'd retain Cisse, because he knows where the net is. In my opinion we have looked better with him on the pitch than Mitrovic.

I have to say, I'm pessimistic about us bringing players in, but truthfully, I don't think we have to. Steve McLaren is a bad manager. He's taken months to figure out what we already knew anyway, this lot can only play one way, and in all honesty, they can get enough results to stay up playing like that. The reason we aren't contemplating the uselessness of our transfer policy from the safety of mid-table, is entirely down to the fact he tried to implement tactics week on week which were completely ineffective.

We can stay up, now Steve has his head out of his arse, but it'll be very very tight.

  11. I don't understand why you wouldn't do that tbh. Transfer window is closed so you can't sign anyone else so why not register the full quota? Gives you the options should you need them. Players can be deregistered if anyone is signed in January.

Well exactly, but the players registered were never ever going to play. Sometimes we have even registered players who did not need to be registered and still stuck to the "our quota is full" line.

  13. But even if you don't expect them to play, if they are on your books and you have squad spaces (that can be changed later anyway) then why not allocate them?

Enrique is exactly that for us; never going to play but registered anyway because we had space.

What's the point in allocating them, only to deregister them? It's entirely moot, and exactly my point. Liverpool have the luxury whereby they don't have as many of these pointless squad additions as us. Doesn't effect the cup competitions they can play in.

Like I said, they're just registered for the sake of it.

  20. Why not register them if it's so easy to unregister them? What is you get **** loads of injuries?

My point is, it doesn't hurt to register them just in case.
