I have been asked to take a group of out of towners around the old town and they want to go to places with a good choice of Rums - any recommendations very much appreciated! I'm a beer drinker so this is a bit of a challenge!
Humber Street Distillery has a fair selection of rum's, either straight or in a variety of Cocktails. It is a pricey place though, our bill was just short of £100 for a couple of hours there on Saturday, and you have to book a table
Both blue label, a less alcoholic one, 40%,than the one which was issued as a tot. And Gunpowder Proof which is 54%. Reason being they are still distilled in wood barrels, the original navy ones, and that is a requirement to be classified as a true navy rum. The only rum that is distilled in wood barrels nowadays. Had a bottle of Gunpowder proof at Christmas. Old age is taking its toll as I can't drink that like .I used to. Will be back to Blue Label. There is one, only available in Germany, which is 75% alcohol. https://pussers.com/pussers-history/the-pussers-difference/
Just drinking my forth Dark and Stormy’ . I love it too much. Tonight I am drinking Havana Especial but the bottle is taking a hammering. Rum, Ginger beer, lime and a bit of ice. Could do with a little bitters but beggars can’t be choosers. Pussers is a great rum but don’t neglect the others. Bring on the fifth.
Things to note: As always people are hugely impressed with the Old Town and Hull keeps surprising people with its elegance (not sure why it's still a surprise). There is a lot more Rum in Hull than people can drink without getting quite ****-faced! As well as the Brain Jar and Walters (both excellent choices) the Lion and Key has a really good selection of Rums (and Gin and Whisky) and the Minerva isn't too shabby either Once they had had enough Rum I got my own way and did the old favourites (Black Boy, George and White Harte) and proved why beer drinkers can still be upright at the end of the night while those who made pigs of themselves early on have a tendency to run to the bog and come back looking green around the gills. Good night, enjoyed by all and as always met a lot of nice people who enjoy chatting about their City to complete strangers. Is rum guide a real job? - if so I'd like to apply
Practising to be a rum guide is a vocation to be treasured. Just don’t mix the rum and beer too much and you should be ok drinking plenty.
