Ruiz has said that he didn't realise that signing for us, he would miss out on playing in the Euro. Jol in talking to the Ealing Gazette also explained -

"He (Bryan) was pretty disgusted with the situation,” said the Fulham boss, who played for the Dutch side for three years in the early 80s. “That was a problem for him because he thought that he could be playing.

“If he had known before, it would have been a problem, maybe. I knew [he couldn't play] but I didn't know it was an issue [for Ruiz]."

Hope he doesn't feel let down.

Its not a case of him feeling let down, but that he proves his worth in the premiership,
and does not let his club or the fans down

My comment related to Jol's position. He no doubt will claim that his lack of openess was in the club's interest - having subsequently admitted that if Ruiz had known he probably wouldn't have signed.

But will his 'duplicity' lead to a loss of respect/trust from that player and for that matter what will be running through the minds of other players?

Of course it's up to Ruiz to prove himself but if he doesn't give at toss it's our £10m down the swanee.

No i'm sorry, I don't buy this at all.

So Ruiz didn't know he was cup tied but we all did? He is supposed to be the professional and doesn't even know the rules...

And I don't think Jol is implying duplicity; the reason he didn't say anything seems to be that he didn't know it would be an issue for the player. It's a shame for Ruiz (and, once he finds his feet, for us) but I suspect this is all a storm in a teacup: the media is probably making this a bigger thing than it actually is.

This guy is going the right way to upset the fans.

Ruiz start making your point with your ability.

See, i'm the opposite Cap, I think Jol knew alright but thought to himself
'If you don't mention it then I won't bring it up'.

However, surely it would state in the contract that he couldn't play?

Woy, I don't think it would have stated in Ruiz's contract that he couldn't play in Europe because it isn't FFC preventing him playing in Europe its UEFA's rules which might change at any time. I'm guessing a footballers contract provides that he has to play in such games and attend such training sessions as the club dicates unless he is injured or on international duty.

What we do know is that Ruiz doesn't read this board because, I seem to recall, we had worked out ages ago that he wouldn't be eligible to play in the EL!

Penguin: Ah, if only more people in the world of football hung on our every word. Think how much better the world could be!

Valjing: Give the guy a chance. He's had 45 (admittedly poor) minutes having only been in the country a couple of days. Let's not hang him out to dry on the basis of press reports which could very well be misrepresented.

Bryan Ruiz is a good player from a good club in a competitive league. He scored 36 goals in two years for Twente, but Ruiz' qualities are subtle. He's not a rampaging, rhino bulldozing his way through defenses. He's not a lightning-quick dribbler weaving his way past the back line.

When you watch the clips on YouTube, he's got a knack for being in the right place at the right time, having enough pace and stength to hold off defenders and get in a good shot. If Fulham fans are looking for an instantly dominant player, I think we'll be disappointed. He's going to score goals if we can get him the ball, but I think it will take time for Fulham's fans to recognize his positive attributes.

One scouting report I'd read said the best player to compare him to is Dirk Kuyt.

This was not Fulham's responsibility to point out.

Ruiz undoubtedly pays hundreds of thousands to an agent (especially over the course of a transfer) to look after his interests. It is the agent who should have made Ruiz aware of his ineligiblity to play European football for Fulham this year.

If we are going to have agents in football, they really should do something.

I totally agree with you Surlyc,
the only thing i can say is that some agents are in it for their best interests if the agent was getting a few hundred grand for this deal to go through do you think he will tell Ruiz that he cant play in europa?

i know he should know the rules and all but nowadays players aint like they was of old, they dont live to breath football, im not questioning Ruiz but its the Agents that have spoiled the players and contracts,

    Agree with that

It's mad when you think about it, as most people who don't play professionaly would love to!
