But you are 100% right - I was fortunate to be involved in the pre-professional days, and it was great to see the post match camaraderie, as well as old players meeting up with former ‘foes’: friendships were made for a lifetime. I was also involved (fairly recently) in the professional/regional set-up. Give me the amateur days every time

Georges Domercq was a ref who had a ‘real feel’ for the game - matches tended to flow when he was in charge.
