This makes me feel very sad, racist remarks fom his own team mates! http://www.edp24.co.uk/sport/norwic...wich_city_even_in_our_dressing_room_1_4728691
Reading the story it appears that all this happened before he even became an apprentice, while still a very young recruit. I would assume that a lot of the, undoubted racist, reactions were from players he was better than, who could see their chances of progressing in the City system being stymied by him.
At that time racism was certainly more prevalent in society as a whole. Just as an ethnic community shielded him from earlier exposure to racism, coming to Norfolk, surely at the time and still one of the least ethnically diverse places in the UK, meant that he would stand out as different and different always provokes some degree of abuse/misunderstanding/attention. It was no more acceptable then, than now but people were less educated to the hurt it caused. The lads that gave him stick knew little better I suspect and it likely came from their parents. Good to hear the club and manager did what it could to stamp it out. I cant help wonder why would Ruel accept their friend requests? Bah!
