If the unthinkable happens and Saints get relegated I was wondering how many of us would still like to see Ruben become the permanent Saints manager if he still wants the job or whether Saints should go for a more experienced Championship manager. For me I would choose Ruben. I think he can do a good job for us and get the best out of the players and the plyers seem to want to play for him and seem to like him. Also if he got us promoted even if it's not at the first attempt he wouldn't be out of his depth in the Premiership. Over to you lot
My gut feeling is if we go down Selles will stay in charge and if we stay up we'll get someone in. I think the board will want a bigger name in the event we stay in the PL. And TBF we would have options. But those options become a lot more limited if we go down, which is why we would most likely stick with Selles.
Much would depend on how the team performs over the rest of the season. If I can see hope and fight in our performances, then I wouldn’t be totally against him staying on, but if we revert to some of the lame displays we have seen throughout the season, then I would be open to a new man. Consistent good performances are key for me.
Agree with Badger. Unless there's an absolute drop-off in form and commitment between now and the end of the season, I'd definitely keep Ruben on. I think he's clearly a talented coach that will likely only get better as he gains experience.
I think/hope Sellers will stay. If he keeps us up, especially if we're playing attractive football, then he will be a big name attracting interest from "bigger" clubs.
He won't as it will be far too early for them to judge him. He'd need to keep us up then get us into the top half.
We need stability. He seems to have galvanised the squad. Unless we crash and burn in the remaining 10 I think he’s here to stay, PL or Championship.
I think we need to see what he is really made of before making a decision. By the end of the season we will know wether he is the man to keep going with, no mater what has happened. We still have a chance of staying up. Either way though we will know what he’s made of.
I pretty much think the opposite of this No way do we not give him the job if he keeps us up. In order for us to stay up he will have had to do a ridiculously good job.
Let's hope if that's true that Saints keep it to themselves, otherwise it's the worst managerial incentivisation programme of all time!
Staying up will mean that we took something like 21-22 points in 16 matches...if we sacked him after that for a bigger name, we should be relegated on the spot.
We can't sack someone who's contract is expired. He was given the job until the end of the season. It's not what I'd do but this is Ankersen we're talking about. I just suspect if we stay up they'll look to hire someone and Selles goes back to his coaching role.
I'm very much in the wait and see how we perform for the rest of the season camp. The mans only had a handful of games in management. Way too early to tell. There is the added complication that if we wanted to bring in a new manager for next season (regardless of league), and wanted Selles to revert to his coaching role, you'd imagine he now sees himself as a manager going forward as we know that's what he wants to do and he'd leave. Only way I could see him reverting to a coaching role here is if we were to bring in a bigger name/highly respected manager that Selles could see the value in working under/with, though that seems very unlikely.
The only name possible for that to happen is Rafa as Selles worships him, and even that is a stretch,
It's a hard one. Would Selles want to stay? In my own honest opinion I'd get AVB in and let him build a squad. We have the foundations here or get Ralph back.
I'm now of the opinion we let him go with our thanks at the end of the season. He was given a nearly impossible task, but there's nothing there which shouts to me to keep him on. A huge clear out from top to bottom needed
