Keane blast at Sunderland owner Roy Keane

    Published on Wednesday 11 May 2011 12:00

FORMER Sunderland boss Roy Keane claims the change of ownership at the Stadium of Light sparked the end of his tenure in the dugout.

Keane enjoyed two fruitful years under the Drumaville consortium – leading Sunderland into the top flight and keeping them there the following season.

But the Irishman insists he became disillusioned after the arrival of new owner Ellis Short, leaving halfway through the 2008/09 campaign following a run of five defeats in six games.

Keane said: “I knew Niall was involved at Sunderland and, on paper, it should have been a nightmare. Six or seven Irish fellas involved and all the politics, but it was actually perfect.

“None felt they were they boss so they just let me get on with it and the first two years were a dream, no interference, no nothing.

“That changed when the club was sold to Ellis Short and when you have one owner the dynamics of the football club changed.

“I was never comfortable. People might think I am a machine and don’t get hurt, but I was hurt when I missed the World Cup, I was hurt when I left United.

“I could have stayed with my contract, but my pride had been hurt and I felt I had been disrespected in a big way and stuff that people will never know about.

“When accusations are made against you and you are told where to live or are accused of doing a one-day week, the time is right to go.

“In terms of supporters, Sunderland fans were brilliant, but, as usual, they don’t know the whole truth and just believe the headlines and all that.

“Sometimes you feel you want the truth out there, but I have kept my mouth shut. But there was stuff going on in the background I certainly wasn’t happy about.”

Keane insists he wants to return to management, though, after being sacked by Ipswich Town in January.

The ex-Manchester United midfielder has been linked with the vacancy at Australia’s Melbourne Victory along with another Sunderland old boy Dwight Yorke.

“I want a club to take to the very top. Sunderland was so close, even in my third season there, just a few poor results which every manager goes through,” added Keane in an interview on Irish radio.

“I can learn from my mistakes, particularly at Ipswich, and I think potentially I could be a good manager.

“But potential is one thing, going out and doing it is something very different.”

    Interesting

As Keane says we don't know the whole story so I aint gunna talk about that

Keane done a good job for us he took us from bottom of the championship to wining the league in his first season then keeping us up the following year. The bloke done the right thing in leaving, he could of easily stayed and picked up his wages, if he did we most likely would of went down.

I hope he gets back in management I like the fella

Agreed. He also raised the profile of the club massively.

Don't look back is good advice, whether as a Club or as a manager.

Keane was a thug on the field whose ethics and morals were, in my opinion, somewhere at gutter level. When he was appointed as Sunderland manager I seriously thought about not attending any games until he had gone but thought " why should I allow a thug to chase me away from the team I have loved and supported since I was 5, some 64 years ago". I have to be fair and say that he did some excellent things at SOL, he brought with him a professionalism that we had not seen in many years, in his first season particularly he instilled a will to win in the team so that we played and worked until the final whistle blew. Think of how many times we scaored the winner or equalised in the final few minutes that season.

In his second season I'm afraid that I think things started to fall apart, players looked as though they did not want the ball especially in his final few months. He spent silly money on players some of whom rarely played, shades of Mr Bruce here. If we are to believe half of what was written when he left he did not spend his full working week at either the training ground or SOL, would our employer allow us to get away with that situation.

On reflection, Keane came to us when we were in need of a strong personality and did a good job in bringing the club into the real world. Having said that I was pleased to see him go but would never wish to endure again the run in to the end of that season.

I think that he just didn't like the fact that Short told him that he has actually got to earn his money by turning up at the club now and again!

Doubtlessly he would have been forced to sign a confidentiality agreement which would prevent him from making any negative comments about his former employers. This is a standard procedure when any employee leaves an organisation. The most annoying thing about this is that he makes remarks which allude to that "stuff that people will never know about" etc. which suggests that there's a lot to uncover. He can say this regardless of whether there is any basis or not. Asking a bloke to live close by to where he works comes natural to most of us, and I fail to see what his issue is. Mr Short wanted answers to some obvious questions and an explanation of why we were doing so badly. Keane didn't have any and off he went. He did a good job when he first arrived in raising the profile of the club and instilling some self respect which had been lost. In the longer term he was found wanting.

I didn't like the bloke. He was a thug on the field as others have said, and a very unpleasant little man. Most of the negative things that he lists are down to him and nobody else, including the fiasco in the WC and leaving Man Utd as well as when he left us. He didn't do anything at Ipswich and it will be very interesting to see where his next job is. It may be managing a third world nation's national team or similar.

You speak a lot of sense there. One thing I would say, though, is that we should be eternally grateful to him for turning things round. He just didn't/doesn't have the ability to sustain things.

The two things that put me off him were:

    (a) describing how he turned the car round and went home after Short rang him on his mobile on the M62 and started asking questions about our bad run of form, &

    (b) getting into a major strop when there was booing at a home cup game when were losing 2-0 to Northampton and being played off the park.

If the owner can't talk to him, who can? And if the fans get brassed off with a totally unacceptable performance, can they not show their feelings?

Keane was brilliant for us at first, in that there was a tough job that needed a tough person to do it and he did. But that doesn't mean we had to kiss his arse forever after!

He was the right man at the right time. We needed a shake-up and that's what we got. I'm happy with the time that he came and the time that he left, and I'll always remember him as he man who got us out of the endless cycle of a yoyo club.

I would like to think he will get a positive response from the fans when he next returns to the SOL.
