A 15-year-old boy has been shot in the leg in a paramilitary-style shooting in west Belfast, police have said.

They said the shooting took place shortly after 09:30 GMT, when "two or three men" entered a house in Whitecliff Parade, Ballymurphy.

They forced their way upstairs and shot the teenager in his left leg.

It is believed the gunmen escaped in a white Ford Fiesta car. The vehicle was found abandoned and burnt out a short time later in Beechview Park.

The SDLP's Tim Attwood, said: "I want to utterly condemn this cowardly shooting which is totally unacceptable."

    'Brutish'
The west Belfast councillor added: "There can never be any excuse or justification for people taking matters into their own hands.

"The violent and brutish actions of some individuals can not be allowed to drag us back into the past."

Police have appealed to anyone who witnessed either the shooting or the burning of the car to contact officers in Grosvenor Road station on 0845 600 8000.

"Information can also be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111," a PSNI spokeswoman said

When I was younger a fella that lived beside me got his windows shot in for lookin a kiddy porn when the cops were in his house warning him of a threat.

He was 18 maybe 19 and they were round to tell him he's in danger.

    Great timing.

A mate of mine got his hands broke with a hammer for hitting his girlfriend. She was making a dick out of him when they were out in the town and he said something to her. She punched him in the face and he threw her to the ground and stormed off.

Next day he got the call.

After they squashed his hand they said how well he took it and said to him about joining up. <laugh>

We have the Magna Carta in England, it says: "we are entitled to a fair trial and on no account should a vigilante smash our hand with a hammer". You should consider adopting it.

The whole thing is just Oirish people shooting each other...

...I really don't see the problem with it - long may it continue.

Hard to tell, as you don't actually say why he got shot.

The frontal lobes of my brain tell me that there can not be many justifications for shooting a child in the knees. The rest of my brain comes to peace far too easily with it, given that when I was growing up it was always the real bad bastards who were getting such attentions towards their lower limbs. What a ****ed up place the north really is.

I guess it doesn't really matter too much what he did. It is more the notion whether summary justice is ever acceptable.

I think there was a time in the not too distant past where it may well have been. Particularly here in the north of Ireland where people very justifiably held no faith in Policing. Summary justice worked and I know a lot of folk lament it going away. That said, I don't think the same arguments necessarily still hold true. People are struggling to (or refusing to) adjust or regognise normalisation of society. Whilst there is less support for the actions of the 'extremes' on both sides I think there is more support for their take on summary justice and I believe this "social policy" is a means of attracting more support.

Personally I think that time has passed now and that it is very difficult to justify it.
