Who? Fantastic! For Scottish football. Tiny team in a tiny football association win a tiny cup in a tiny country? Too much?
Ross County only got into the Scottish League in 1994. Now they're in the top 6 of the Premier League and they've won the League Cup. It doesn't matter what league or what country you're playing in, it's still been a fantastic achievement. I'm pleased for them.
I think it says more about the poor quality of the football north of the border mate, that a new club can come out of nowhere and achieve national success. I think the last time that happened in England was probably Wimbledon. But our game has moved on since then. To me, it's a sad reflection on the game up there.
Leicester winning the League will be the ultimate top league shock in my lifetime. Transcends what Cloughie did in my humble opinion. But they're an established club. Small club done good, but established. Not on the scale of Wimbledon, nobody Wimbledon, winning the FA Cup from nowhere though. A different competition, a different time. I guess the only thing that comes close for me was that small Italian club, Chievo(?) something like that. Population 3,000, winning La Liga, or whatever it is over there. It would be like my village winning the League!
Well, there's no doubt about the way Scottish football has deteriorated. Even in the '70s, Borussia Munchengladbach got a 5-0 hammering off Dundee United and Aberdeen won the Cup Winners' Cup, beating Real Madrid in the final. Neither of those things could happen today. But you can only beat what's in front of you. And Ross did that. Well done to them.
But is this not a reflection of how things were at the time when teams were built and new each others game inside out making them into a confident competitive team. At the moment Bournemouth are the example of a built team that has played their way into the Prem together over four or five years. This time last season Leicester were just beginning their fight against relegation and look at them now with basically the same team spending only buttons compared to those who shop around and spend zillions hoping to achieve success.
