Rory McIlroy eased to victory in the US Open at Congressional to round-off four superb rounds, reports the BBC.

McIlroy - who finished with a comfortable eight-shot lead - broke a host of records en route to victory.

The 22-year old is the youngest US Open champion since Bobby Jones in 1923 and the youngest major winner since Tiger Woods' victory at the Masters in 1997.

He also broke an array of US Open scoring records as he finished 16 under par.

Australia's Jason Day (68) was second, with Lee Westwood (70), Yang Yong-Eun (71), Kevin Chappell (66) and Robert Garrigus (70) all tied for third.

The Northernn Irishman showed a new-found resolve to overcome his Masters meltdown, when he blew his first big chance at a major by letting a four-shot lead slip on the final day.

McIlroy, the leader from first round to final round, carded 65, 66, 68, 69 to break the tournament record of 268 by four shots.

He is also the second successive Northern Irish US Open winner following Graeme McDowell's victory at Pebble Beach last year.

He said: "The whole week has been incredible - I could not have asked for any more and I am so happy to hold this trophy.

"For such a small nation to win two US Opens in a row is pretty special. As Graeme [McDowell] said last year, there will be a lot of pints of Guinness going down.

"I know a few of my friends will be partying and I can't wait to get home and join them."

During the presentation ceremony McIlroy shouted across to his father Gerry: "Happy Father's Day - this one's for you.

"I have to mention my mum too. Everything they have done for me I can't thank them enough."

The margin of McIlroy's victory - especially given the tough reputation of the 7,574-yard Blue Course - ensured comparisons Woods and his first major win at the 1997 Masters, where he won by 12 shots.

McIlroy showed no sign of the nerves that dogged him at Augusta, and opened with a birdie to stretch his lead to 10 shots. Another birdie at the fourth put him 17 under.

An outstanding birdie came at the short 10th when he again showed no sign of pressure by hitting his tee shot six inches from the pin. His second bogey of the week came at the 12th after he found a bunker.

He made several good pars as he played it relatively safe. A birdie at 16 but him back on 17 under, but a lapse of concentration on the green at 17 meant he dropped a shot.

But victory was already assured at that stage and he finished the job with a safe par at the final hole.
