In this beautiful country of Northern Ireland one can identify themselves as being British or Irish. Born and bred Ulsterman Rory McIlroy, the number 1 golfer in the world, has now opened up a can of worms by saying he feels more British than Irish.

I will cheer the lad no matter what decision he makes ;)

But he will know that he's gonna be representing us Brits.

The young fella also has to be applauded for making the decision in the first place but let's face it, team GB won 65 medals including 29 gold, the Irish team won 5 medals, 1 gold.

Not a hard decision to make. <ok>

I think his discarding a tricolor, that had been given to him by someone in the crowd, on the ground last year when he won the US Open pretty much told us everything didn't it?

For what it's worth I don't think he'll make a final decision until much closer to 2016 when he can then see which team he has a better chance of getting into.

As far as I'm aware he's half n half, but that doesn't bother me at all. He picked the good side.

Already seen Facebook pages shooting up saying about boycotting the lad's games <laugh>

Indeed, his attitude has so confounded observers that many people in the Republic genuinely believe he is a Protestant, when in fact he is a Catholic who attended Catholic primary school and had his first Communion.
His parents, also Catholics, were married in the church where he was baptised as a Catholic. Yet tragically, it is the same church in which Rory’s great-uncle Joe lies buried after he was murdered by a UVF hit squad determined to stop Catholics settling in ‘their areas’.

Tend to agree but it would be very funny to see Medro's Facebook page if Mcllroy suddenly changed his mind and played for Ireland. It would be even funnier if he decided he didn't want to have to make a decision one way or the other, married Wozniacki and then took Danish citizenship

But that's mixing religion with nationality. Not every proud N.Irishman is a prod, just like not every proud RoIrishman is a catholic<GrahamNorton>
He identifies more with being British. <applause>

Pitch forks and flaming torches down to Hollywood golf club.

True. Great golfer no matter his nationality and he'll still be bringing home the bacon.

I think it's tragic that he has to disguise himself with that comedy hat & wig combo he bought from the joke shop. It's a sad indictment on the attitudes that people like Mick display in NI society.

I've still no idea what Ricky Fowler's excuse is though.

I don't know anyone who cares about this. If he's a Brit he's a Brit.

Why did people doing the opposite (specifically in football) get so much grief?

Are you suggesting that there isn't always a ying to a yang?

Well I never.

Only people not secure in their identity care about stuff like this.
