I am a big fan of horseracing. I have horses one of which is an ex-racer! But this organsation is incredible! They fund racehorse welfare centres round the country one of which Moorcroft -http://www.mrwc.org.uk Alot of these centres have mainly horses that wernt quick enough and some that have been injured that are donated to them by the trainers/owners. They provide facilities for the care, retraining and rehoming of former racehorses promotes the adaptability of racehorses to other equestrian activities. Without these centres these horses would just disappear. As said before I am big horse racing fan and love the sport and the animals, which proves also what life these horses have they get treated well while racing and also after too! but I just felt like writing a article about them giving them some praise for what they to do the sport
Hear, hear! They do so much but are very badly funded. They should get a lot more funding from the sport, perhaps a % of sales revenues or prizemoney. I did some voluntary work a few years ago at Darley's retraining centre in Newmarket. They don't the centre but send horses (geldings only) there to be reschooled and rehomed. I came very close to rehoming a gelding by Dubai Millennium myself, but sadly we didn't gel. They only charge £120 for each horse, though you sign an agreement stating you will return the horse to them if you have any problems and that the horse will never be used for racing. You can see more about the Darley centre here: http://www.darleyrehoming.co.uk/index.asp
Ditto. There are some inspirational stories of ex-racehorses that have been retrained. http://www.heroscharity.org/ and http://racehorsesgreatwood.org/index.php also carry our this valuable work. There are lot of retired racehorses that are still young enough to enjoy a second career with great success.
Some amazing stories there Janabelle- PN- I do some voluntary work at Moorcroft retraining centre in West Sussex- Although it is a small yard compared to Darleys the facilites they have and the land for these great animans are fantastic. The trainers gives the horse with a donation (usually a figure around a months worth of training fees) Although you give a donation (which is alot less than there actual worth) they are on a permanent loan basis- so basically if for some reason you dont get on the centre will always take him/her back. and I agree although they get funding etc... they should be recognised more and yea % of the sales revenues is a good a idea.
