I know very few of us give a toss about England internationals (I know I don't), but what are your views on Rooney being given the captaincy?

Ridiculous, the lad has no leadership qualities. If things aren't going his way he'll either throw a hissy fit or get sent off (or one followed by the other).
Its a good job that it's only San Marino, where the captain really isnt (shouldn't) going to be needed to lead by example

No doubt he is a good player, but Captain of his Country?
He wouldn’t have been my first choice or 2nd for that matter. But the decision has been made, and we should support him in the role

I'd sooner have your avatar as captain of England. I would watch the match then <ok>

Of all the people that could have been picked... Rooney? Possibly the worst candidate on the pitch for the captaincy.

Rooney replacing Gerrard as England captain? It's disastrous. People around the world listening to the England captain being interviewed will think we all speak like that!

I must be the only LFC fan in the world that thinks that this is a good thing. He is experienced and has worked under some fantastic captains, he will need to mature though. If he can do that then I can see him as a long term capatain once Gerrard retires

It shows what you cna do and still be captain, kick scream throw fits and play pooly, gets you England's auld cappy armband.

Considering though that Terry (Low life and racist.. latter not serious) and Rio who goes shopping instead of taking drug tests as well as his blathering, Rooney a better selection than those had they been available.

I think Hart would have been worth a punt if he's playing. Appears much more the leader than rooney who is only out for himself tbh, he does not personify TEAM that wayne chap

I'm no fan of Rooney but the bit in bold is absolute ****e. I think he's very much a team player. When Ronaldo was at United he was asked to play a supporting role to the Stepover Kid which he did. He's now adjusting his game to accommodate RVP. Compare that to someone like Walcott who is threatening to leave Arsenal because the manager won't play him as an out and out striker. I would question Rooney's leadership qualities though.

    Should have been Hart.

Should have been anyone else...not Rooney who has shown no ability to be a mature, responsible, leading figure in the last ten years.

I agree he can play in a team, but when you say this club is not matching my ambitions I'm leaving, in a team that has won him bags of trophies and awards and fame. Thankful much :)

No, wayne is totally out for himself, hence getting himself banned for the first 2 WC games, and you think he's a team player, I'm afraid I disagree <ok>

He couldn't have given two fks about England when he kicked that player because HE was annoyed.

Give it to Hart now, let him do it for 10 years.

It shouldn't be Hart. He doesn't have the position on the field to lead his team. He can't get involved in referee decisions and he can't give words of encouragement to his team. Most of all he can't see why the the are playing poorly and whip them into shape.

The FA have in essence condoned Rooney's violent conduct. In footballing terms he does deserve it but is he the type of player that you want your children to become? He's a bit childish and boorish. Unfortunately with Gerrard out there is no one in your team that really could lead it. It's a group of individuals as opposed to a unit.

I think it's a good idea. It might make him grow up a little with the extra responsibility. Teams usually pick one of their best players to be captain and Rooney is certainly one of our better players (although he's yet to truly shine at international level).

I remember reading that other countries place less importance on who the captain is than England do. And I'd have to agree with that, as I've always thought we hype the position up too much. Personally, I'd have given the armband to Hart, but Rooney isn't all that bad of a choice, IMO.

Point 1. Some outdated perceptions here of what a Captain does ON the field, which in reality is very, very little. He is not organising players, changing tactics, telling players to pick someone up. So claiming it needs to be someone in the middle is outdated. All the captain is there for is to swap pendants and shake hands and flip a coin. A goalkeeper can do that.

Point 2. Good old England, ****ing it right up again. Making the granny shagger captain of the National team...LOL They have basically give the captaincy to the biggest names player in the team, which both proves the stupidity of the FA/Hodgeson, and the level of consideration, and therefore the importance given to the roll. I know it's not long term, and maybe Fergie picked him, in his position of FA puppet-master.

But I have to <doh> over how this has unfolded.

    Rooney.

    A winner, a fighter, a team player.

The perfect choice for captain really.
