Anyone else wondering why Rodwell hasn't come into the conversation as a short term solution as CB? Clearly, cover is needed there, Coates looks unlikely to return soon, and he might even offer an immediate improvement on Brown, who's legs are beginning to deceive/betray him.

Many Everton supporters claim CB was his best position, but Rodwell himself says he hasn't played there since he was 16. Poached some quotes from an article published in August (find below) where he suggested he'd be happy to play CB for England if it represented a way back into the side.

Many here believe he's been a big disappointment in midfield, is it possible he could turn into be a revelation at CB? Even if he was used there just until the Jan window, when reinforcements may arrive, maybe he could prove quite useful. Maybe he'd be our best CB even?

‘For me, it was difficult to watch (the World Cup) because I wanted to be there so much,’ said the three-times capped former Everton man.
‘Now I want to be back in it - that’s why I signed here.’
And Rodwell is confident of winning that call, regardless of the position.
‘I’d back myself to get back in at centre-midfield and I believe I could at centre-back,’ he added.
It is in midfield, however, where he would prefer to influence matches.
‘I’m here (at Sunderland) as a central midfielder,’ he said.
‘I haven’t played centre-back since I was 16 really. But you never know, maybe one day I might step back when I’ve got no legs.
‘I’m wasted if I play there though. I think I’ve got more to offer than playing centre-back – it’s boring as well.’

I've mentioned it numerous times, but i don't want him taken from midfield or it really will become flat as a fart none of the other cm arrive in the opponents box, ever. He'll get us some goals, a decent tally too if he hits some form.

How about if Brown or O'Shea go down to injury? Long time until January.

Well that's why I've been mentioning it, i've become a bit of a bore harping on about our defensive shortage. If needs must then needs must but we need him going box to box and we need him to hit some form.

See how I finished my op? <laugh>

Really hope it doesn't come to it but I think it will.

For such a talented lad his impact has been poor ...... I keep watching and wondering when he'll come alive.

It's all very well talking about winning an England call up but he has to do better than he is.

I just can't see the courage in the lad ....... Kevin Ball would've slapped him by now tbh.

He's a very good player, his lack of form can't last forever surely?

We could try him in the back four in an emergency, as he has offered little to the mid-field so far, I would give it a try, with an outfield six of
    catts - bridcut
AJ - Fletch - Buckley or Mavrias
    Whicks.
