Brendan Rodgers’ job is not under immediate threat from Liverpool’s American owners in the aftermath of Sunday’s 6-1 Premier League final day defeat at Stoke City and the club expect to pursue their transfer targets as agreed this summer.

Fenway Sports Group is making an enquiry about the Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke, who has two years of his deal left to run and could fetch a price in excess of £20m.

The owners still also hope to sign the summer’s two leading free agents, Danny Ings and James Milner, and as yet there are no moves to replace the manager, with whom they have drawn up this list of potential signings.

Rodgers went into Sunday’s game aware that he would face what has been described as a robust and thorough review of the club’s season, most likely in Boston with the key figures in FSG some time next month. The owner, John W Henry, and Mike Gordon, the second-largest shareholder in FSG, are likely to attend that meeting, as well as Anfield chief executive Ian Ayre, but there is no current belief that Rodgers is under threat.

The meeting is expected to be about how the club and the owners can get more out of Rodgers, as well as addressing his £117m spending last summer after the sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona.

There is the possibility of a new director of football being appointed to oversee transfers, although the club’s nominal transfer committee already has a major say in which players are signed.

Before the season, FSG set out a top-four finish and Champions League qualification as Rodgers’ target.

The club have little time to waste in preparing for next season, with the chance they could begin Europa League third-round qualifying on 30 July if Aston Villa win the FA Cup final on Saturday. If Arsenal win the Wembley showpiece, then Liverpool’s sixth-place finish will be enough to qualify them for the group stage of the competition.

It was reported in Germany last night that the former Borussia Dortmund manager Jürgen Klopp is to take a six-month sabbatical from football, ruling himself out of any potential move to Liverpool.

Kolo Touré is set to sign a year’s extension at the club, despite his relative lack of playing time, to give what Rodgers hopes will be the benefit of his experience to the team next season.

If true, then clearly no lessons have been learnt and we can expect further mid table mediocrity next season.

Our owners might have saved us from administration and possible relegation or worse and plowed in transfer funds but they are naive and getting amateur advice when making professional decisions that affect the clubs future.
Read a while ago they get advice from a "soccer expert", anyone calling footy soccer is pure amateur.

    Brendan Rodgers warned Liverpool's poor

Brendan Rodgers warned Liverpool's poor season CANNOT happen again - and that changes are coming

If Rodgers can’t accept the changes – and they could yet include the appointment of a director of football – he will be asked to quietly step down

Safe for now: But Rodgers will have to buy in to owners' vision
If Brendan Rodgers has been given firm assurances over his future, then they come with an even firmer caveat.

The Liverpool manager may have received confirmation that the club’s US owners will not hit the panic button, and their backing for him has not changed despite the 6-1 humiliation at Stoke.

Yet, along with that message, came another crucial one that will determine the direction in which the club will head as they contemplate a season of disappointment.

The word from the Americans is clear.

This season cannot happen again, so not only will there be a review, with their manager asked some brutally direct questions about his role in the failure, but there will be no sense of Rodgers being asked to simply continue in the same manner as this year.

There will be major changes, a “beyond robust” examination of the structures and cultures currently in place at Anfield - demanding alteration to ensure there is no repeat.

At present, the mood within the ownership group – made up of chairman Tom Werner, principal shareholder John Henry and director Michael Gordon – is those changes will stop short of the manager.

Gordon will direct the review and ask Rodgers to buy into not only the long-term strategy, but also deliver firm guarantees of rejoining Europe’s elite in the Champions League.

In short, they will gauge if he can meet his targets. It is here the manager’s future will be determined.

If Rodgers can’t accept the changes – and they could yet include the appointment of a director of football – he will be asked to quietly step down.

Do YOU think Brendan Rodgers should be sacked?

Likewise, the same message will be offered if he feels he can’t work within the club’s very closely defined transfer and wage policies which emphasise homegrown talent.

So far, all the indications are that the Ulsterman IS prepared to buy into that philosophy.

The review will get underway in earnest by the first week of June, when Rodgers is likely to travel to Boston to meet Gordon face to face, and sit down with him andHenry - and possibly Werner - to thrash out the changes.

Until then, the Americans will keep their powder dry.

They have made NO approach for any other manager, and will not make any enquiries, even if it means losing out on the available Jurgen Klopp.

The plan remains the same – Rodgers will continue into next season unless the review makes his position untenable.

It promises to be a pivotal month for Liverpool.

Before the season, FSG set out a top-four finish and Champions League qualification as Rodgers’ target.

well kenny got sacked for making 2 cup finals as owners wanted top 4, so what will the excuse be for keeping brendan then when it has been a lot ****ing worst than what kenny managed with less funds and a better return!!!!!!!!!!

i expect a p45 when they have this meeting next month and the media are just making up headlines until that point as they have no clue what is going on.

    ****ing shambles!

Pay no mind to anything written in the press, it's all just bilge to shift papers, who knows what's really going on in their heads and behind the scenes. Only an official announcement from FSG will have any truth

Everyone knows the club is a leave sieve and frankly sky sources are probably true.

    The club is so unprofessional.

KD and his methods were widely thought of as the past tbf while Rodgers and his method and style very much the future...and probably still is despite this season's setback.

A £10m+ bill to pay off him and his backroom staff probably doesnt help either <laugh>

  15. If we sign this three then should be expecting one or two others too. Benteke for around £20m, Milner free and Ings about £4m.

A DoF should be familiar with BR's playing philosophy. Someone with Tiki Taka experience. Some old statesman from Barca perhaps?

In Man City if Pelligrini stays, maybe Bagiristain will go. Maybe Bagiristain will become Liverpool DoF. Do we still have Spaniards involved in the Melwood Academy? Could be a good linkup.

Whatever happens after this 3rd June review, the club must act very fast. We need a DoF in place to identify SUITABLE transfer targets and to appoint a DEFENCE coach.

What is Rodgers's style? He doesn't have one.

And a DoF should come in before the manager.

  18. I think a stronger assistant is more important than a defensive coach. Someone that's going to pull him up for stupidly playing the likes of Toure, Johnson and Gerrard (I know the latter two won't be here)

    Terrible terrible decision.

There is no middle ground. You sack him, or back him FSG. A DoF etc will just make it worse, forcing rodgers to make signings that don't fit his style. Unless BR thinkgs Benteke, Ings and Milner are exactly who we need :/
