Chelsea's new manager Andre Villas-Boas has revealed the late great Bobby Robson was a huge influence in his career.

The 33-year-old Portuguese tactician was advised by the former Porto and England manager to undertake as many coaching courses as possible early on.

Villas-Boas has enjoyed a meteoric rise through the football ranks having worked under Jose Mourinho before landing his old Stamford Bridge job this week.

However, Villas-Boas has not forgotten those who helped him achieve the success he has enjoyed, especially the inspirational Robson.
    Important

"Bobby was a very important person in my career," explained Villas-Boas.

"He was the person who advised me at a very young age to go on coaching courses and unlocked the doors of Porto for me to have access to his training sessions.

"We had a very good relationship and he was someone I respected a lot and was respected in world football.

"What he did he did not only with me and Jose but with all different kinds of people, promoting them and inspiring them to take their own role and their own way.

"He is somebody who means a lot to the English game and I think he would be happy of course, to see me here at Chelsea now."

The more I read on Sir Bobby, the more I admire him! When people complain that the word legend is used to readily, they could never say it about him!

Brings a tear to my eye. Once again this shows what a thoroughly decent man Sir Bobby was.

Imagine how different the club would have been if Robson owned it.

Its when you remember that he's held in such high esteem overseas due to his time in Holland, Spain and Portugal which so few English managers even attempt these days (which is why I quite like Steve McLaren). Proper footballing legend, not just a Sky 'big name' like a Redknapp or an Allardyce.

You just have to look where we were under Sir Bobby and then think about what has happened since he was sacked.

He didn't win half as much trophies as he could've. Shame, as he was a decent guy.

I think Aston Villa deserve a lot of credit here.

They were obviously convinced they'd got him as their manager, however have not shown any sour grapes by allowing him to keep the Birmingham Gazette headlines as his name.

He obviously likes it and they benefit from the quedos of being associated with him.

When he won the Europa Cup last season. He said then it was for Sir Bobby, as he had been such a great influence.

It wouldn't suprise me if we still hear about Robsons influance on people within the game for the next 20 years. A true gentleman and a credit to the sport
