Paul Robinson is today set to sign for Pompey to shake up Andy Awfordâs defensive options. The News understands the long-serving Millwall player will join on an initial one-monthâs loan, with the option of an extension. That will pitch him straight in for a central-defensive scrap ahead of Saturdayâs League Two opener at Exeter. Ben Chorley and Jack Whatmough were the centre-half partnership in the weekend loss against Charlton. Yet, once again, Awfordâs rearguard looked susceptible â a concern which has been evident since the loss at Ebbsfleet. Chorley, Whatmough, Joe Devera and Alex Wynter have all featured in the position following that 3-0 defeat. Meanwhile, Johnny Ertl has dropped back there as a substitute on occasions. Worries over the defence continue to linger, however, prompting Pompeyâs boss to recruit Robinson. The 32-year-old has made 362 appearances for the Lions since making his debut in September 2002. A firm favourite at The Den, the powerful defender was granted a testimonial last summer against Rayo Vallecano. He has also served as Millwallâs club captain for a number of years and last season made 27 appearances, despite being on the transfer list. Pompey saw Bondz NâGala and Sonny Bradley leave their central-defensive ranks in the summer, with only Wynter arriving in that department. Wynter is seen as a more versatile option across the defence, however. Robinson is expected to attend his first Blues training session tomorrow. Awford must then decide whether to name him in his side for the Football League curtain raiser at Exeter.
UPDATE Paul Robinson has signed on to stay at Fratton Park until next January on loan from Millwall. Good news, as he has settled in well in the centre of our defence. Jamie Ashdown has signed a contract to join Crawley Town until December. Good luck to him
