Chelmsford City were established in 1938, replacing the old Chelmsford FC, which had been in existence for 60 years. In their very first season [in the Southern League] they reached the Fourth Round of the FA Cup, beating Second Division [Championship] Southampton in Round Three before going down 6-0 to First Division [Premier League] Birmingham City. They won the Southern League in its first season after World War Two, and again in 1960, 1968 and 1972. Although they applied to join the Football League on many occasions they never received more than 8 votes in the election process. In 2004 they took a sideways step to the Isthmian League, winning the title and promotion to Conference South in 2008. They have reached the playoffs in each of their three seasons in Conference South, but have not progressed from the semi finals. Cheers for all that Dev. A great read, as always. I will plump for Chelmsford today, having spent a year in Colly. Not the glasshouse I hasten to add, although we did play a mess do there once, and the NCO's showed us around beforehand, talking about the various inmates and their assorted misdemeanours directly in front of them, as if they were dumb animals at the zoo. Horrible place, but the shiniest floor I've ever seen.
