The Road to Wembley – Fourth Qualifying Round

This is the final phase of stage one; the final qualifying round before the League clubs join the fray.
This round sees the introduction of the Blue Square Premier’s 24 sides as they join the 40 remaining sides from the earlier rounds in their quest for one of the 32 places in the First Round Proper.

    Chelmsford City v Gloucester City

    Focus on Chelmsford City.
Chelmsford City were established in 1938, replacing the old Chelmsford FC, which had been in existence for 60 years.
In their very first season [in the Southern League] they reached the Fourth Round of the FA Cup, beating Second Division [Championship] Southampton in Round Three before going down 6-0 to First Division [Premier League] Birmingham City.
They won the Southern League in its first season after World War Two, and again in 1960, 1968 and 1972. Although they applied to join the Football League on many occasions they never received more than 8 votes in the election process.
In 2004 they took a sideways step to the Isthmian League, winning the title and promotion to Conference South in 2008. They have reached the playoffs in each of their three seasons in Conference South, but have not progressed from the semi finals.

    Cup Run so far:

    Second Qualifying Round
    Chelmsford City 3-0 Tonbridge Angels

    Third Qualifying Round
    Lowestoft Town 2-5 Chelmsford City

    Last Season

The Clarets reached Round Two. Having beaten fellow non-league side Hendon 3-2 in Round One, they went down 3-1 at League Two outfit Wycombe Wanderers.

    Random Fact

Between 1959 and 1975 Chelmsford only failed to reach the First Round Proper on two occasions; 1965-66 and 1971-72

Cheers for all that Dev. A great read, as always. I will plump for Chelmsford today, having spent a year in Colly.

Not the glasshouse I hasten to add, although we did play a mess do there once, and the NCO's showed us around beforehand, talking about the various inmates and their assorted misdemeanours directly in front of them, as if they were dumb animals at the zoo.

Horrible place, but the shiniest floor I've ever seen.
