CRISTIAN RIVEROS and Marcos Angeleri could be on their way back to South America this summer.

Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill has revealed that Angeleri is keen to revive his career back in his native Argentina, while a meeting has been scheduled with Riveros’ agent to discuss the Paraguayan’s future.

Argentina international full-back Angeleri has endured a nightmare spell at Sunderland, with a serious knee injury restricting him to just three appearances in two years since joining the Wearsiders in a £1.5m deal.

Riveros signed at the same time and, while he has not been dogged by the same injury problems as Angeleri, he failed to nail down a first-team place last season and was sent out on loan to Turkish side Kayserispor for the current campaign.

Martin O’Neill admits he has not seen either player in match action since he took over in December, but is looking to clear the decks in order to begin bringing in his own signings over the summer.

“Marcos has just come back [from injury] and he’s done a couple of days’ training with us,” said O’Neill.

“Over the last couple of weeks he has been out doing work with the physios on the training pitch, and in the last few days he has joined in training.

“But I heard talk while he was recuperating that he probably wanted to go back home again. I haven’t sat down and spoken to him yet – there was little point until he got fit.

“As for Riveros, he has been out on loan this season and I often wonder whether it was the club that wanted that.

“There is a meeting with his agent here in the near future and I’ll see what happens there.

“Sometimes players feel that maybe a change of environment is what they want, and if that’s the case then we will look at it in that manner.”
