Sad to see him go, but along with Joey, Dee Dee and Johnny will never be forgotten. The Music Lives On RIP
Tommy only played the drums because Joey couldn't do it fast enough. Tommy was only in the band for the first three (and by far the best) albums. He was replaced by Marky, who played faster, then Richie, who played faster still! What an antidote to all the prog rockers of the early/mid '70s. 7 or 8 minute dirges replaced by two minutes of pure adrenalin rush. Everybody had to up their game then; rock'n'roll had changed forever. The punk bands knew they needed tunes and to play faster - not just shouty anthems. Beach Boys melodies and bubblegum lyrics allied to buzzsaw guitars and pounding drums became the blueprint for thousands of indie and pop punk bands. All trying to nail a song half as good as Rockaway Beach. What a legacy.
