Sad news of the passing of Jimmy Hill, player pundit and chairman of the Professional Footballer's Association. He was responsible for scrapping the maximum wage for players, paving the way for today's multi-million pound deals.

Always enjoyed watching him on the box - he knew his stuff and was never afraid to tell it as it was. RIP.

Yeah, he was good bloke Jimmy Hill. Talked some ****e at times but knew his football in old fashioned way.

(you know, back when the football was ****, as all us oldies sometimes like to remember it existed)

    Sunderland fans gobbing again.

RIP an iconic figure and an interesting voice in English football when football was not all about Sky money.

Most young fans won't realise that it was Jimmy Hill who forced through the 3 points for a win - glad he did or we'd have just 16 points this season

Yet he played a major part in scrapping the maximum wage.

****ing cheating bastard that he was, if you want to know why he's such a cock and why every Sunderland fan hated his guts then have a look at the thread on our board. It's there for all to see what he done.

Why? He's just died fella. It's just common decency to show some respect. And if you can't do that (for whatever reason) then say nothing at all. I don't think coming on and villifying an old man's passing, is going to get any sympathy for your cause tbh.

Trying to blame Jimmy Hill for players wages over 50 years later is like blaming Thomas Edison for global warming ffs.

It has no relevance to today, however, without the maximum wage being removed the league would never have developed into what it has eventually become. As foreign players would have not been attracted to it and gone to where they could earn more cash and ditto for our own best players.

You lot being bitter about what happened in the late 70's (which you could never say definitely altered history anyway, as that game could well have played out to be a draw without Hill's announcement) has lead to some piss poor comments about the bloke's life in football in general and his personal life, post his death.

To be fair you could have kept your hatred of him on your own board. The guy's just died, if you don't want to show him any respect then that's up to you but it's the wrong time to be running around spreading your venom.

He didn't show us any respect and was a horrible, cheating bastard. Him dying doesn't change any of that <ok>

Your hatred of the man is based on that one event and the rest of the bile spouted is about justifying that opinion, and attempting to besmirch the man's legacy.

Other football fans don't share your perspective, and in any case the bloke has just died, and most would find the torrent of abuse chucked at a man who's barely cold to be somewhat distasteful, irrespective of whether you were justified in vilifying him about that day nearly 40 years ago.

How many times have Sunderland been relegated and promoted. It's a relatively minor event in a piece of history which is irrelevant today. I honestly dont see what there is to warrant such hatred and abuse on the man's death. Bear in mind it's not one game that led to relegation, it was the whole season which needs to be taken into account as always.

Just out of interest Safc83 how old are you, is the 83 bit in your user name significant?

I only ask as many on here are under 50 years old and something that happened 40 years ago would be of little consequence to them yet you come over as though it hurt you personally.

he just made sure his own team Coventry had the best chance to stay up, boo hoo.

Teams do allsorts to gain an advantage from where they sit the away fans to how long the grass is. Other teams make away facilities poor so it effects the away team mentally. It is all the same thing.

It would be a befitting end to the season in which we lost a great English football icon if Sunderland got relegated again <laugh>

Yeah by cheating the horrible ****.

I've made my feelings clear, he was a hypocritical, cheating twat and I'm not bothered one jot that he's dead.

Him and Maggie Thatcher, **** the pair of them around these parts <ok>

You're missing the point. No one cares that you blame Jimmy Hill for your team being a bit crap 40 years ago.

Obviously had your team won a few more points in the previous 41 games you wouldn't have needed a scapegoat but if you are intent on blaming him for your own club's failings then please keep it to your board and/or any other boards that are remotely interested/sympathetic.
