Former Everton Keeper Gordon West has passed away , 400 games plus in the 60s. Famous for being given a handbag by the kop http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/live...ip-with-the-merseyside-derby-100252-20680791/ Tommy Smith says “I managed to get on the scoresheet, opening our account by heading home from a corner. Our other scorers on this momentous day were Hunt (two), Willie Stevenson and Ian St John, who netted the fifth and final goal. “When that goal was scored, one of our supporters created a moment of derby legend and folklore. “He ran on to the pitch, presented the Everton goalkeeper, Gordon West, with a handbag and quickly disappeared into the crowd, leaving everybody roaring with laughter, Everton fans included. “Gordon was in fact a very good goalkeeper and couldn’t have done much about any of the goals that day. “Apparently everywhere he went in the city Liverpool fans would come up to him and ask ‘Where’s your handbag Gordon?’ “The incident was received with humour by the police as well. To the best of my knowledge the supporter was not apprehended and charged with any offence. “It was seen as it was intended, as a light hearted bit of tomfoolery with no harm done. “I’m not sure that officials today would regard it the same way. Thank goodness for progress, eh?” RIP Fella!!!
