Didn't realise that he was 71, RIP to one of the greats of football who use to get hacked down as much as George Best, and like George Best spent quite a bit of time on his ar*e during a game. Quote from Sky News website: He scored 733 goals in 745 competitive games over his career and in a poll conducted for Uefa's Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2004 he was voted as the 7th best European footballer to have played the game. He won the European Cup with Benfica in 1962 and was named European Footballer of the Year in 1965. Nearly a goal a game, that is some going when he was clobbered so much. It was what a friend always called him, and it tickled me. I don't know if he made it up or he got it from a TV comedy show - it has a Partridgian feel to it, but it pre-dates Alan Partridge.

My husband comments....." A thread only a month or so ago discussed where Eusebio ranked among the all time greats of football. In that I said he was one of my all time favourite players and saw him play in a floodlit friendly for Benfica against Man United in 1962. I always knew him as the "Black Panther" and when I was in South Africa in the late sixties I visited the house in Lourenco Marques(now Maputo) where he was born.
