http://bloodstock.racingpost.com/ne...r-dayjur-dies-aged-26/1536747/bloodstocknews/ Sad to see that Dayjur has passed away. Fabulous sprinter in Europe, but most memorable for coming 2nd in the Breeders Cup after jumping a shadow.
One of my earliest Breeders Cup memories, him jumping the shadow. Fabulous sprinter who blitzed his fields and was superbly handled Major Dick Hern. RIP.
Dayjur epitomises my betting career, I backed him in his first race against what turnes out to be plodders and Carson managed to get him cosily beat into second! RIP Dayjur - Considering who was riding you, you were a true Great.
I know how you feel, I will never forget how I was let down in a yankee for a very considerable sum by Pilsudski in a handicap, the horse went on to cover himself in glory in about 30 different countries afterwards but couldn't win a handicap when I needed him to. Dayjur was a real sprinter, one of those with only one speed which was flat out from the gate, no tactics necessary. A grand old age for a great horse.
Noooooo. My second favourite horse ever. And by far the greatest sprinter i ever had the immense pleasure to watch. The way he trailblazed to victory was incredible, and his Nunthorpe victory was his finest performance. No horse that i have ever witnessed would have lived with Dayjur that day..and that includes black Caviar
Hern campaigned Dayjur as if he was his Guineas horse, and by mid-May 1990 he looked a very disappointing horse after looking so promising on his first two starts as a 2yo. He then ran in the Temple Stakes at Sandown and was ridden as he needed to be ridden: out of the gate like a scalded cat. However despite that impressive win he lined up for the Group 1 Kings Stand as a relatively unfancied animal (I was returning from Scotland and when I heard the price I tried to find a betting shop in Stocton on a very rainy Friday: I found one, parked up and was a minute too late...bloody Stockton). The rest was history. A beast of a sprinter. Of the ones I've seen I'd put him up with the very best.
