Rio Ferdinand: QPR's poor start to the season has turned me into a CAVEMAN Oct 03, 2014 22:30 By Mike Walters Hoops' ex-England defender returns to first club West Ham on Sunday to make his 500th Premier League appearance - but isn't in party mood. please log in to view this image No Rio carnival: Ferdinand and QPR have been leaking goals in the early stages of the season Rio Ferdinand admits QPRâs poor start in the Premier League has left him sulking in his âcaveâ on Saturday nights. Former England captain Ferdinand returns to his first club West Ham in the third of Sunday's televised matches, with his current side anchored in the bottom three and question marks hanging over his own form at age 35. The centre-back switched from Manchester United, where he won six titles, to Loftus Road outfit on a free transfer in the summer, but so far the Londoners have managed only one clean sheet in six league matches. As he prepares for his 500th Premier League appearance, Ferdinand admitted: âWeâve not done as well as we would have liked yet. âAt United, Saturday nights were better â you want to put yourself in a cave and not come out of it when you lose and, at the moment, Iâm sat in my front room most weekends. âWeâre working hard on the training pitch to put things right, but results have not gone for us yet. âThere was some improvement at Southampton last weekend, when we lost to an unbelievable strike, but I never thought it would be a walk in the park for us this season.â Ferdinand revealed he had struck up a good accord with Joey Barton â an unlikely meeting of minds, perhaps â and added: âWeâve had some good discussions about all sorts of things. please log in to view this image Unhappy return: Ferdinand lost 4-0 when he went back to Old Trafford as an opposition player âIn fact, Iâve joined a good bunch of lads here. They want to do well, thereâs a good spirit and I couldnât have gone to a much better dressing room.â Ferdinand has come in for some flak for his part in a defence that has leaked 13 goals in six games â the second most in the top flight. But Hoops manager Harry Redknapp reckons the 35-year-oldâs errors are being highlighted due to his high profile. He said: âI donât think itâs fair. Youâll always pick on the big players, but I didnât see him make too many mistakes against *Southampton last week. Itâs *probably because heâs *high-profile. âWeâve shipped miles too many goals. Weâve been a bit open and we need to tighten up. âIâve got no problems with Rio. Weâve got experienced players, but youâve got to be solid in front of them.â Ferdinand will become only the 11th player to reach the 500-game landmark and Redknapp reckons the player he signed as a kid, two decades ago, was always destined for big things. The Râs boss added: âHe was only 15 and I saw the potential in him then. I said he would be the best defender in Europe because he was on another level. âI knew he was going to be a big player.â http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/rio-ferdinand-qprs-poor-start-4374492#ixzz3F7cS9t1L Follow us: @DailyMirror on Twitter | DailyMirror on Facebook
I wouldn't normally put up another Rio thread as I'm quite honestly getting a bit fed up of the bad publicity he is bringing to our club which most of doesn't even involve us. But it's these comments below that give me a small margin of hope that this season isn't completely lost already. Little victories eh? “We’re working hard on the training pitch to put things right, but results have not gone for us yet.'' “There was some improvement at Southampton last weekend, when we lost to an unbelievable strike, but I never thought it would be a walk in the park for us this season.” Ferdinand revealed he had struck up a good accord with Joey Barton – an unlikely meeting of minds, perhaps – and added: “We’ve had some good discussions about all sorts of things. “In fact, I’ve joined a good bunch of lads here. They want to do well, there’s a good spirit and I couldn’t have gone to a much better dressing room.”
Must be a real culture shock compared with MU. Agree that maybe his "high profile" could be a hindrance and highlights mistakes. He'll be fine.
He certainly knows how to trot out all the 'key' words ................... one can only hope he is genuine in his comments and that we will see some improvement.
still not sure on rio when I heard he was coming I didn't want him the more I read of his professionalism the happier I was now he is here I wish he wasn't maybe when he stops pushing his book he might start paying attention to us
