As an older person who has spent most of my life on the edge of a succession of financial abysses, I sometimes think that men who go from rags to riches must have some kind of special skill or intelligence that I lack. Then I watch them take over football clubs - the latest being Mr F at Quite Possibly Relegated - and these guys seem to be absolute morons. How do they get so rich in the first place? From the decisions we watch them make, you wouldn't trust them to run a corner shop. Does football allow them to return to a simpler childhood, with a football club as a kind of grown-up train set, and give them a chance to release their inner hippie? Or has money corrupted them and made them such egomaniacs that they won't listen to anyone's advice (except for the yes-men they pay crazy wages to - a certain Mr A springs to mind here)? In any case, let's bless Delia. Somehow she seems to have managed to stay relatively sane and level-headed despite making what (to most of us at least) is a ****load of money.
When I started out in business 35 years ago I,like you, wondered where these rich businessmen got their money from.It soon became quite clear - their dads.In the case of those who were "self made" the vast majority either inherited it,or at least had someone who they could go to a bank and say would guarantee their loans. On that basis you don't actually need to be a financial whizz kid.If you watched QPR's 4 year plan you could tell that even the middle eastern guy juggling the figures would have been out in the souk selling dodgy sunglasses to podgy yorkshiremen.
you cannot ever get mega bucks without screwing someone over therefore anyone like Mr F, the Shieks who own manure City, and Mr Chelski should never pass the fit and proper test if the authrorities were ever strong enough or had the back bone to enforce the rule. I hope we never ever get bought by anyone like them Id sooner be in the CCC with Ms Smith at the helm if it all comes down to money, ( but not as low as Mikey and the Chip van man obviously lol!)
What I don't understand is that half these owners come from Asia which isn't exactly a hotbed of football. What's it like where you are VC?
