A different match report from what I normally get to read, and so informative, keep up the good work.

This happens to me now and again so I've got into the habit of copying my post before posting, ready to paste if all is lost. It is bloody annoying though.
And sometimes, like now, I'm automatically signed on without having to do anything.
    OK. Copy.

Sunderland Res 1 Gateshead Res 0
    21 September 2011 19:08

Sunderland Res 1 Gateshead Res 0
    Stuart Vose at Eppleton CW

David Meyler played his first 45 minutes since January as Sunderland's reserves ran out 1-0 winners over Gateshead in the Tote Cup.

The midfielder came off at half time as planned having impressed with an energetic display in front of watching assistant manager Eric Black at Eppleton CW.

The Irishman certainly didn't shy away from a tackle in his first outing for more than eight months.

Keith Bertschin's side, who haven't tasted defeat since the opening day, produced another impressive performance as they remained patient to break down a Gateshead side who defended stubbornly.

Visiting keeper Jak Alnwick put in a fine display to frustrate Sunderland before he was eventually beaten by former Arsenal man Roarie Deacon with a quarter of an hour remaining.

The single goal was enough for the hosts against a Gateshead team who defended resolutely.

The Black Cats created a succession of chances, with the first coming 12 minutes in when the marauding Liam Marrs played found Craig Lynch, who tested Alnwick with a low shot from 12 yards.

Oumare Tounkara bundled the ball wide from close range with 25 minutes gone and then rattled the base of Alnwick's right-hand post with a low shot from 12 yards just moments later.

With Sunderland dominating, Louis Laing's fine run from deep took him past four men before he teed up James McClean to curl a shot straight at Alnwick with seconds remaining in the opening half.

Meyler was replaced by Billy Knott at half time in a planned substitution as a successful comeback was brought to a close.

Striker Tounkara's frustrating evening continued when he saw a close-range header tipped away by Alnwick 10 minutes into the second half, while the Gateshead keeper did well to get down to a McClean snapshot following a fine run by the winger.

Then Deacon shot wide in a scramble as the visitors' goal led something of a charmed life under Sunderland pressure.

Only another fine save from Alnwick - this time a brave block at the feet of Lynch with 20 minutes to go - kept the scores level, and it seemed as if Sunderland's luck was out when Deacon had a goal ruled out for a marginal offside.

But*the hosts'*probing was finally rewarded 15 minutes from time when substitute Knott crossed low from the left and Deacon ghosted in to slot the ball home from six yards to win it.

Sunderland: Pickford, Marrs, Watson, Meyler (Knott, 46), Bagnall, Laing, Deacon, Armstrong, McClean, Tounkara (Reed, 63), Lynch (Mitchell, 80).

    Subs Not Used: Egan, King.

    Booked: Watson (57).

    Sent Off: None.

Gateshead: Alnwick, Baxtor, Rents, Briggs, Moyes, Lay (Gilbert, 78), Brittain, Nix (Eloung, 57), Wiafe Danquah (Burj, 63), Mulligan, Fisher.

    Subs Not Used: Marshall.

    Booked: Baxtor (57).

    Sent Off: None.

good for Meyler! will be happy to see him back in a couple of months time (in the 1st team).

Laing sounds better and better, Tounkara and Deacon also sound good.

Meyler did nowt special and certainly didn't stand out from the crowd. Lucky not to get booked for kicking out at a player. Needs to get rid of that from his game.
Mclean didn't get much of the ball in the first half but has great pace. Much more involved in the second half and likes to come inside from the wing. Showed some neat touches.
Louis laing was solid at the back and likes to run the ball out of defence which he did to good effect.
My man of the match was right back liam marrs. A small lad with good pace and always looking to get forward. Defended well also.
Overall gateshead played above their standing especially their keeper. We had majority of possession and played some good passing football.

I dont expect meyler to be doing anything special for a while still, I'm just happy he has made his injury comeback. Before he was injured I thought he was excellent and will be happy if he can recapture that form..
