http://www.oddschecker.com/football/football-specials/rep-of-ireland/next-permanent-manager I don't mean to alarm anyone- however that alarms the absolute HELL into me! Martin O'Neil was 1/8 on before, and he's now drifted so far to 11/8. McCarthy was 7-1, now in to 5/4 with Skybet. Please, NO !
For what its worth I think MM will leave us this summer, The alarm bell went of when the Irish FA stated they were in no hurry to find a replacement as they do not have a competitive fixture until next September.!
I can see this happening, even if it did i am more confident that those in charge have more of a clue than the chinless wonder cleggy! Whatever happens, at least we have a stable ship and strong spine to build upon.
Thats a very interesting market - the dark lord is as little as 4/1 in some places. I think it will boil down to how well we do this season. I think if they wanted O'Neil, they would've had in place by now. The fact that they have stalled in appointing someone leads me to believe that the Irish FA are going to wait to see who is available at the end of the season. There will be a few decent managers out of work come May, and If we have pulled off a miracle and somehow got promoted, i don't think MM will jump ship and go to Ireland - if we don't get promoted, i genuinely feel he will be their next manager.
I found McCarthy's comments about not wanting to sign Hunt rather odd. With the greatest of respect, Wordsworth hasn't played because he's not good enough and Tunnicliffe can play anywhere in midfield and is on loan. I would take Hunt in a heartbeat. So, I don't want McCarthy to go but he's hardly setting the world alight at Town.
I'm not a big fan of MM's style...but his overall record with us is "good". He has averaged 51% points for us, which is usually about 7-8th postion (with the exception of the crazy year last year) His goal tally is 1.3 goals for per game, and 1.1 against. Judging by these stats, i'd have to agree with Hamps...he's not settign the world alight, and he never has done with ANY of his teams, he's always been a very steady no nonsense dont lose first kinda manager (which in all fairness is what we first and foremeost needed) I'vr always said he's not a long term manager, i'd be happy for him to be with us for 2-3 seasons, but thats all...he's good at steadying the ship, but we would then require someone else to come in and push us onto the next level..someone younger with more hunger and a desire to exceed.
If you compare Mick's record to the last few managers I think you will find that he is setting the world alight!
I have every faith in him being here at the final game of the season... after that, I'm not too sure. I'm also not too sure if I'd be that disappointed if he didn't stay on either... Been exactly what we needed (and still need) and a good season with the team finishing in a promising position could be an ideal opportunity for a younger (longer term) manager to come in and build on MM's (& TC's) sterling work for the years to come... but obviously still a few months of hard graft before we can say we've really progressed If he were to stay then fair enough and I'm sure he'll put his heart & soul into the job and drag us up the table with all of us (barring Spanish & Hampy supporting him to some extent)
I kind of agree with both statements As Warky has said, compared to the previous recent regimes MM's record is definately one of arson but I think I can also side with Stretchy on the 'safely, safely, dont get beat' approach. Solidity was required and solidity is here. Im glad he is here and Im not pushing him towards the exit but I do sometimes wish he would release the shackles abit more. He certainly doesnt inspire me but I know we are no longer in for a humilation when I enter PR these days. Very much a safe appointment rather than an exciting one (Probably one of the few decent decisions the club has made in the last 10 years!) Personally I think the ROI job is looking rather difficult. They dont apear to have a talent pool that can get them flying currently. Gone are the days of Given, Dunne, Duff, Keane etc. They still have some decent players but I wouldnt consider it to be the most enticing job opportunity.
Hey Warky you know what I'm saying. It's a massive improvement not to be fighting relegation by October but we all know where we are aiming. If McCarthy decides to leave for the Eire job again that tells us how much ambition he has for our club and we're better rid, and if he stays we have a decent manager. I won't be popping champagne corks or crying into my cornflakes of a Saturday morning either way.
I agree with alot of the comments but Mick really has done miracles here, in terms of points gained and end results as it were I don't think we could have asked for more and he's a proper manager level headed who doesn't panic and actually tries to coach players rather than just buy players in to replace those who aren't performing. But at the same time I really do not like the fact he just never really takes risks, it's all the more frustrating because I think he actually is a good manager but his stubborness and his aversion to go out of his comfort zone hold his potential back IMO and have stopped him being a success in the PL and also becoming one of the best managers in the country. Also one thing which frustrates me about Mick is he seems to rate players/teams performances more on out of possession play than in possession. I'd be very worried if he left this season as I think we'd struggle and it could be similar if he left in the summer as the squad we have isn't that great and I doubt there are many managers out there capable of getting as much out of this squad as Mick can, I mean look at what has happened at Wolves!! But then I would like a manager who was a bit more of a risk taker, played more attacking tippy tappy/progressive football and a little less stubborn, I don't think you could have a safer pair of hands than Mick though, everyone else seems like such a risk.
