Gary Speed was my hero growing up as a kid. I had my hair like his, tried (and failed) to play like him.

I remember being in the Peacock with my older brother and his mates a couple of hours after beating Everton 1-0 in the Div 1 title winning season and he walked in with Batty and Strachan. I was a shy 11 year old kid and was introduced to them but never said a word.

Great player.
 
Nice one Matt, those boys of his will be early 20s now and men, wonder what they’re getting up to?

Last I heard they were both playing college football for different universities in New York, but that was a couple of years ago.

Not seen Gary's father in law since before COVID began, so am out the loop now.

Lots of memories about him, nicest lad you could ever know.

When people talk about being down to earth, quiet and unassuming, those words are actually accurate in this case
