Some quality players being let go from clubs the last couple of days. West Ham and Aston Villa have let go of a few I'd love to see at Ashton Gate.

One of my biggest concerns is the defense as I think it's been in dire need of refurbishment way before GJ went.

So if I was DM I'd go all out to sign up Carlos Cuellar (30 year old ex-rangers central defender) and Julian Faubert (28 year old Right Back once linked with Real Madrid). Two proper defenders with substatial experience. With DJ and Maynard off the wage bill, surely some scope to bring these two in on decently paid contracts?

I'd also like someone like Brad Guzan or Craig Gordon to maybe looked at as well for first choice keeper.

    Probably wishful thinking though.

My guess is that Gordan was on minimum £40k per week and probably more - how do I know...?

I don't but it is usually a pretty good rule of thumb that the wages for the period of the contract are roughly the same as the transfer fee so in this case, £9m divided by 5 years = roughly £1.8m wages per year

Yeah good point, I did say it was wishful thinking.

I'd still like to spend some serious money on our back line and goalkeeper though, areas we seriously lack in.

Annoyingly there are gonna be a lot of big clubs in the Championship next year, and when it comes to yearly wage budget, we are gonna be right near the very bottom of teams that can compete. When you look who is coming up and who is coming down, and the teams that got left behind that didn't go up.

Everton have released James McFadden and keeper Marcus Hahnemann.

My pick to get would be Joe Mattock. He is an England u21 left back who has been released by West Brom. Has been on loan at Portsmouth and Brighton this season. Plus we need a decent left back and he wouldnt cost a penny.

Reference Joe Mattock. And many others we may like to sign.
It's not the transfer fee these days which is the big cost - it's the wages that some very ordinary players are demanding that is the problem. (This comment does not refer specifically to Mattock but is a general theme that all clubs are mentioning in one way or another)
Unless DMc has specific targets who are still under contract, in which case the fee will be a significant factor, it is most likely that the majority of our signings this summer will be "free transfers" except when wages are taken into account, they will hardly be free!

Yeah I like Joe Mattock and he would only get better having to train against Albert day in day out. I remember Albert tore him in half at the Gate one year, then when we subbed Albert we brought on Haynes, poor bloke had no chance against their pace.

I think free's are the the best way to go. Money could be put to much better use like more solid investment in a below par youth academy. But say DM had £2 million to play with over the summer, I'd just use it all on wages if I were him. So many good players knocking around for nothing, I'd put it all into a salary kitty.
