Bobby Reid and Premier League interest - what we know about his contract situation at Bristol City
The forward is wanted by several Premier League sides
The future of Bobby Reid at Bristol City continues to be a hot topic for Robins fans.
The 25-year-old Bristol-born forward has been at the heart of everything good about Lee Johnson's team this season.

With an impressive 17 league goals, Reid leads the way in the Sky Bet Championship alongside Derby County's Matej Vydra.

The Robins are still in with a shot of clinching a play-off spot and a possible place in the Premier League which could seal Reid's signature.
But with interest building - will Reid still be with City next season?

Which Premier League clubs are interested?
AFC Bournemouth are the latest club interested in the forward with the Bristol Post understanding that the Cherries have sent their main scouts to watch Reid in recent weeks.
The south coast side could make their move in the summer if City fail to win promotion with Reid's contract situation uncertain.
Previous reports have suggested that three Premier League sides: Burnley, Leicester City and Brighton & Hove Albion are all keeping tabs on the situation.

When does Bobby Reid's contract expire?

Reid's contract has at least until the end of the season and another year (as per a club option).
He signed a new deal in June 2016 which should keep him at the club until at least 2019.
The forward has been offered a new deal but is yet to sign it.
The Post understands that Reid wants to play in the Premier League, ideally with the Robins, and is currently undecided on his future and that talks will take place later this year between the club and the striker.

What has Bristol City CEO Mark Ashton had to say?
Ashton has confirmed that the club are in talks with signing up their best players after Aden Flint penned a new long-term deal last month.
He said: "I think those conversations will be ongoing. None of our players in the starting eleven [against Bolton] will be out of contract in the summer and we'll sit down at the right time.
"There isn't a date, they are ongoing discussions and they will come to fruition at the right time."

"The planning for the summer starts now. I have said before we try to work a couple of windows in advance to avoid making panicked decisions. We have shown that over the last couple of windows.

"We have known what we wanted to do early. We'll do that again in the summer."

How he became the Robins' main man

Wishing to learn a bit more about the striker's game, the Bristol Post spoke to former Bristol City Academy player George Rigg - who now patrols midfield just down the road at Bath City - who kindly gave us an insight into how Reid developed at youth level.

Rigg explained: "He's always had quality and you could see that he was one of the best there [in the Academy ranks] - and he's one of the best players I've ever played with. It's nice that he's got the chance to show it.
"He's always had an eye for goal. He knew where the goal was and he's really dedicated. Even in his spare time he's always doing things practising. There's a lot of work off the pitch that Bobby puts in to obviously be able to then perform on the pitch.

"He's a really dedicated lad and it doesn't surprise me he's been doing so well."

What does Lee Johnson think about the situation?

"You never know in this day and age," explained Johnson, when asked by the Post if he's confident that the duo will put pen to paper in December.
"You're never sure of the influences around the players. You've got agents, you've got parents, and they've both got good agents and good parents.
"But obviously they're good players and naturally there will be interest in them.

"We've got them on healthy terms. We want to keep our best players and we'd include Bobby and Joe in that, and then you've got the likes of Paterson and a number of players that are out there that we want to keep.

"We'll have to see. But at the moment it's not my job, my job is to focus fully on preparing the team ready for Saturdays and let the powers that be discuss what they're willing to do or not willing to do with their new contracts," he said.

"I can promise you that they have more years than that [one] on their deals. You often get club options in deals today and I certainly insist on that.

"We certainly wouldn't want to lose any of the players who have come through our Academy," he said

If all true this is quite a disturbing article, you have the club saying, " The forward has been offered a new deal but is yet to sign it", then you have the player saying," He,Reid wants to play in the Premier League ," then Mark Ashton says, "We have known what we wanted to do early. We'll do that again in the summer." Then our manager Lee Johnson says, "We'll have to see. But at the moment it's not my job."

Now I know this is just a pick of what was said but where is the urgency when we could be losing a star player and who's job is it?

I Imagine he will wait to see if we get to the Premier before making his mind up what he wants to do. I fear him and a few others will look to move on after the display given against the premier sides in the cup run.

I can't see that happening this season so he'll be off I'd imagine if a Premiership club comes calling.
Don't imagine it will be one of the biggest teams, but he might attract interest from a Burnley or similar.

How long do we wait for him to sign a new deal?

I think wait until July - then if he has not we should cash-in

If it drags on then not only does his value drop, but also less time to get an adequate replacement

Might be a mixture of the timescale and seeing whether we get any genuine bids for him. In todays market he has to be worth £10m at least ?

He is also technically under contract with us until 2019 anyway according to the notes from Wiz.

He's had a new contract on the table for ages - what more do you want the club to do? Sounds like he's decided to wait until the end of the season to consider his options and there's not likely to be much that could be done about that - other than offer a ridiculous wage, which certain people would say was a mistake after it was signed, but what ought to have been offered if he left.

Seems like a classic scenario where before the season started there were a large number of fans saying 'get rid - he's not good enough/strong enough for this Division', he proves them wrong by having a great season and suddenly he and/or the club are the bad guys for either not signing or offering a contract'.

I'm sure he has a great affinity for the club, but I for one am grown up enough to appreciate that he needs to consider his own career and what would be best for it. The offer of Premiership football is surely the ambition of every young footballer, so it would be a bold decision to turn down the possibility. He should be mindful that it'd probably be better to be a regular starter in the Championship than persistently on the bench in the Premiership, but also not afraid of the challenge - turning it down would be construed by some as a lack of ambition.

I hope he stays as I'm delighted he's proven me wrong by being so good this season, when I thought he'd be a handy squad player at best.

Would you lay out a large sum after one excellent season.

No, I would offer him a decent-ish contract for the next few years, which I presume is what City have done.

I'd be happy to take Reid to the Premiership and to a club who play a high press/passing game and that don't 'launch' it.
From afar, Bournemouth would seem to be a perfect fit for Bobby Reid, I'm sure with better players around him he'd thrive.

He's obviously playing the field and looking at his options if you look at in retrospect but then again is it just another sign of how today's breed handle their business. If you look through the daily gossip columns you will see it littered with the names of moaning players who don't think they're getting a fair shake for some reason or another and are opening the doors to move somewhere else to start all over again.

The clubs that are apparently after his services aren't exactly on my list of top clubs but if that's who he is interested in joining, so be it and good luck to him. If the contract that has been offered is not what he is prepared to accept then perhaps he should move out because I for one don't want us to mess up another contract/transfer deal just to try and satisfy a supposedly unhappy player. The list of moaning players includes Sanchez (again), Balotelli (again) and Pogba (again) and of course there are too many others to mention, but unless clubs are prepared to stand up and say no more this idiotic situation will keep arising.

Of course I would like Bobby to stay but at what cost to our bank balance and our sense of dignity? Sign Bobby and show the commitment, but only if that's what he and City want. Please don't waste time on an obviously lost cause and don't let him go skiing.

Yes I certainly would, he has never flattered to deceive me, always new he would be a top player, and at the right Premiership club would become an even better player.

Not sure what happened there , what I meant to say was it's not just the money , any player would want to play at the highest level possible, so the chance to play in the premier would be difficult to turn down. He may not get the chance again.

Funny that a lot of us could see that there is potential there, and I’ve copied Redprint into this as I remember him mentioning he could become a really good player years ago.
You proved you’re not all there when you put it that poll of Reid or Taylor.

new contract, opt out clause of bid over £xxm gives him 2 chances to bail out as is 2019
or more chances if he signs for 3 or so years.... it is in his interest to sign longer contract as his fee/s will be higher as will his agents!

It’s business at the end of the day. Reid wants to play at the highest level and hopefully it’s with us but if not good luck to him.
I just hope for his and our sake it doesn’t turn into anything like the Nicky Maynard debacle.
Where is he now by the way? We passed him on our way up!!!
