oh **** off Werner, these owners are starting to do my head in. how do they expect us to achieve with a self-sustaining model? it's impossible. Arsenal have been going this way for years and look how they've done - ****e. Liverpool FC, like any business, will need investment from its owners and so far they've contributed sweet **** all
Ya I just get the impression that 15 mil will be our max spend on a player for a while :/ Whilst saying that though, there are definately quality players you can get for that but just gotta find them or get them in early. This quote for me ended any talk of Ramirez, Johnson, Jovetic, Vargas those type of players that will cost 15+.
I think Werner said the right things - it's better than telling the world that we are willing to spend £100m on a single player because then we'd get ripped off again.
I imagine our target for this season is NOT going to be for top 4. Instead it is to not overspend or lose any money. Exciting times.
And we will be Arsenal mach 2, never spending more than £15m on a player and never competing as a result. I understand where they are coming from and one day it would be great to be self-sustaining, but initially we will need a big injection of investment to get the ball rolling, we can't self-sustain from the position we are at now - it would take years for us to compete.
But I thought Fergie had the only team that played youth and spent sensibly........... I just don't want them to miss the point either..... Without CL you are missing out on massive revenue, media coverage, star players wanting to play for you ( and thus merchandising $). Also without CL you are running the risk of losing your best players and having to find replacements all the time which may turn profit but you will be losing more than you gain by slipping down. Again not saying we have to buy like Chelsea are right now, but you have to spend a little dosh here and there on quality. Hence why the 10-15 for joe allen for me is just crazy when Marin was bought for 7 million, Cabaye for 5, deals are out there.
LFC009/Jeezon Torst Netspend since FSG have taken over is +£23m, it's not all that much for owners that want to 'win the title'....
I don't want us to spend like Chelsea or City, but is it too much to ask for one marquee signing this summer? Perhaps spend more than £20m on a decent and exciting player? I would be truly shocked if we spent £20m net this summer in TOTAL.
Net spend is deceptive. At the end of the day, Kenny spent £35m on Carroll, £20m on Downing, £16m on Henderson, £8m on Adam - all in quick succession. We received a lot of money from transfers but this money was then spent on the players above pretty much straightaway.
Yes I know, I guess it doesn't help that DC/KD vastly overpaid, but that shouldn't mean that FSG stop us spending now because of the bad decisions of the previous management, they have to support and back their new manager.
We had our chance...and we ****ed it basically. Lets face it though, as long as Chelsea and City have their millions we have absolutely no chance of wining the title or competing with them. In the mean time if we do things right we can catch up to the likes of Arsenal, Spurs and maybe United and compete with them for the next few years. Even Barcelona aren't able to spend €25m. The only Clubs spending ridiculous money are the oil clubs.
I think they will in time. They seem a bit cautious now and don't want to make the same mistakes. It's a shame but it's as if Rodgers needs to prove himself that he can spend the money wisely before he is given more. And I agree with Bluff. There are a lot of good deals out there but we seem stuck to spending big money on British players (£16m on Allen)?
I don't see the title as being realistic for at least another decade or so, what I would like is to compete in the CL again and become a real European force again like under Rafa. FSG need to get us back into the CL and names like Allen for £15m really don't fill me with optimism
That was such a crucial time as well, we had a great second half of the season and had some money to spend. I am fine with Henderson and Carroll ( end of season) to a point but Downing and Adam that is 28 mil that just seems like a waste and now those players are ina system that isn't as suited to them and if we get rid of Carroll then the purchase of Downing will look even more dim as when we signed him the first thing that came to my mind was that we bought him to put the ball in for Carroll, whenever and however.
Allen and Walcott if bought would probably cost something close to 30 mil, I would just hate to see other teams start buying quality players for less than those sums. If it is more of what the manager feels more comfortable with, then fine it is his choice, but he has to know that the quality is out there in the other countries at the moment?
This is what I was thinking, we don't need to spend loads on quality. We've mentioned many times before....Ath Madrid, Villareal and all the money stricken/struggling clubs have some cheap talent out there. How Ligue 1 Champions Lille let Cabaye go for £5m astonishes me though....Newcastle pulled that one off.
