Liverpool today agreed a fee with Hull City for the transfer of Daniel Ayala.

The Championship club have now been given permission to discuss personal terms with the defender.

    Thoughts?

I'm personally dissapointed he'll be leaving the club as I thought he might come good. Surely now we must be looking to bolster our defensive options?

He looked good when he made his debut against Stoke I believe. Not an easy game to come into, but I guess he wants first team football now and with Agger, Carragher, Skrtel, Soto, Wilson & Kelly all infront of him it doesn't look like he'll get much of a look in.

I'm not too surprised, if he was ready then he wouldn't have been sold. He looked a bit shaky pre-season and I think perhaps in the Championship he has found his level. There are also plenty of promising defenders ready to come up, we knew we couldn't keep them all, a few of them will have to be sold.

Doubt we would sign him if he was on that, i believe our wage budget for a standard player is below that, but if we have a fight on our hands we would pay it as he is a class act. Not the position we need, we need a striker but by far and away will be the best centre back in this division.

Not convinced he could cut it at the top level. Regular games will help him a lot. Will probably turn into a good signing.

he's probably a little better than Jack Hobbs (current level), and like him needs games. As for his potential, well who can say. I'd say Championship level currently, but could stay with you if you get promoted and stay in your side for years. Good luck to both!

Quality signing for us. Made Gerrard look distinctly average at time last season, can tackle, can head, can kick a football accurately...
    Great signing for us :D

I always thought he was like young Kennedy who was released out of the youth team/reserves. Talented but not strong enough to make it in the premiership. He would never get ahead of Andre Wisdom, I reckon he's got the makings of a top class centre back, he just needs to be given a chance. Theres in my opinion something about him. Moreso than Stephen Sama.

Ayala and Chester could be the best centre back pairing in the league, unfortunately I think NP will persevere with Hobbs. Nobody's perfect.

The truth will be found out in the end. I just hope James Chester has the character to deal with what is about to be dealt to him, and isn't spoiled by it.

I can't believe people are so convinced that NP will halt the development of our most talented defender, just because we have another decent one on the books.

It can only be a good thing to have a 3rd good defender, and as I've said many times we will have our fair share of injuries and suspensions so in the absolute worst case scenario (from Chester's point of view) he'll play in half our games.

We've got to trust NP - he's bought all three players.

Yeah, we know how he played it last year - but he's not blind - he must see how well Chester's been playing.

We cannot complain about having quality back up in the squad whoever it is, especially since injuries in our last two seasons have completely buggered our most recent campaigns - think about Hunt, Bullard, Mannone, Stewart - having depth in any position is essential. If Ayala wants to be here, and we can afford him - then to me, we should get him, and deal with squad issues once he's here.

Even if NP sticks with Hobbs - either a) it will work, in which chase sorry Chester - but the club comes first, or it doesn't, in which case the pressure will be on NP to change it.

I don't think it will be an issue though.

I think we need an experienced centre-half, but whilst he isn't exactly 'mature', I think playing with him will benefit Hobbs. <ok>
