Redknapp explains why QPR rescue mission is harder than Pompey & Spurs By Tom Moore Tuesday, November 27, 2012 7:00 AM Harry Redknapp has described his task of keeping QPR in the Premier League as his biggest challenge because of the clubâs embarrassing points total. The Râs are at the bottom of the table, with four points from 13 games and Redknapp, who has faced situations like this before with Portsmouth and Tottenham âYeah, I would [say it was my biggest challenge],â Redknapp said. âGoing back to Portsmouth, I knew if I failed there I wouldnât be alive now. âI donât know what would have happened. This is a tough one as well.â When he took over at Pompey the south coast club were not in the relegation zone but it looked as if the 65-year-old was heading for a second successive season in the bottom three before a late run saved them. But QPR, although at an early stage, are already cut adrift at the bottom of the league. âThe position of where we are makes it tough,â he added. âYou donât have four points from 13 games if things are going well. We keep saying weâve got a good team. âHow do you end up with four points? Itâs an incredible total. Weâve got to find a way of getting them playing better. âAny side should be higher than four points. âItâs an embarrassing total for the players that they have. Weâve got to do better. Itâs going to be hard but weâve got to.â Tottenham had picked up two points from eight games before Redknapp replaced Juande Ramos and Redknapp felt that improvement wasnât needed as much. He added: âItâs different to Tottenham for sure. Tottenham was eight games. âYou looked at the squad and it there werenât any areas that needed dramatic improvement. âYouâve lost Zamora, Johnson. Itâs left me short in one or two areas. âWe know what weâve got and weâve got to get the best out of this group now. âWeâve got to find a way of winning football matches.â
I agree with him, it's going to be a really tall order. The statistics show that no team has ever survived in the Premier League after picking up so few points after 13 games, and even before the prem I think that there's only one example of it ever being done before in the top flight. It would be a massive achievement, way harder that what Mark did at the end of last season. If we make it, and it's a big if, then Redknapp will become a genuine legend here.
It's interesting that his focus is on points collected and not on catching up with the other teams, and he's absolutely spot on with that. We have to focus on ourselves and forget about how other teams are doing; otherwise it's like a sugar treat when they lose and were back down again when they win. We need another 36 points, that's all that matters. If we get that amount it won't matter how near or far other teams are to us.
When was that? Not when he took over anyway. When he retured to Pompey they had 10 points and weren't even in the bottom 3. When he became their manager for the first time they were already in the championship weren't they?
