Just seen on the BBC that the Football League has announced their three-man shortlist for the Young Player of the Year Award and Nathan Redmond is on it, which I have to say I find just a little surprising. Sure, he has had a good season and looked very dangerous, unplayable at times, but he's been far from a regular and I'm sure most Norwich fans would say our best starting XI wouldn't include him. Patrick Bamford and Dele Ali are the others on the list, and I'd imagine Bamford would win out of the three as he has been excellent for Boro. I'm really pleased for Redders, but have to say as the award covers all three FL divisions I personally would have thought others would have made the list ahead of him, Pritchard from Brentford for example who has been superb all season. Ah well, good to get a bit of recognition for a change at least!
Makes you wonder if they actually watch any games. Redmond IMO has had his worst season since he came here.
Bamford should walk it As with Munky, I am surprised NR is included. I am still not won over by him. Sure he can run fast, and sometimes score a goal but on the whole, he is so far from being the 'real deal' in my opinion.
Agreed. It seems we are more often talking about hs he scares a few defenders than the actually work he does in terms of assisting/scoring. That said, he's had his best season for us in terms of goals and assists, and I think since he;s become more of a bit part player under AN, he has actually shown more quality (The assist against Brghton as a recent example). I think he had too much pressure put on him under Hughton, played far too many games at the time and should have been more of an impact player or someone to use against "weaker" opposition.
I think dave is right that the award is probably taking into account his entire contribution and for England he has been awesome. I wouldn't go as far as JK, but under Neil Redmond has been superb, partly because he's been used as a young player should - sparingly and generally as an impact sub. Having said that, even under Adams he was playing well enough, though admittedly not consistent. Although I appreciate that stats aren't to everyone's tastes, 4 goals and 8 assists (to say nothing for his recent "penultimate passes") speaks for itself. The only other things to say are that, aside from the three above there aren't many young players who have really shone this season in the football league to my knowledge. The likes of Callum Wilson, Nouha Dicko, Vydra, are all just over the qualification as I think they need to be 21 or under. I suppose Alex Pritchard might have had a look in ahead of Redmond. But Redders would be in virtually every other Championship team's starting line-up and he doesn't shine so much in ours because of the strength of our midfield. Other than Bamford
Bamford will probably win it - he does play for Chelsea after all (well, is on their payroll anyway). He probably deserves it in truth although I'd have given it to Pritchard - the best player I've seen a CR all season (obviously Bamford hasn't played there yet lol)..
Was very surprised to read this nomination and am not complaining as good to see our boys in the honours lists but not really sure its that deserving, with "Young" being the operative word in this article i guess the hat fits and not sure we have many other young players that would qualify, ignoring the stats for assists and conversion rates etc.
Who is Neil Redmond? I think you're spot on with this though. Shouldn't have been expected to play so much for us over the last few seasons.
Had R Bennett not been injured, I don't think he would have.. As someone said to me the other day, his problem was the goal he scored against Saints at CR, as he tries to go for goal too often IMO.
Redmond ? No way pedro ! If Laughapool want to offer stupid money let him go, couldn't lick the boots of Foggo, Eadie,Gordon,Fox to name but FOUR !
