OBSERVER | Watford FC plan to re-open the Red Lion pub in Vicarage Road as a sports bar before Christmas – but it will probably undergo a change of name.

Watford FC fans' Red Lion pub set to roar into life again
    www.watfordobserver.co.uk
The Hornets’ new owner Laurence Bassini, who took over the club in April, has this week told the Watford Observer he plans to re-open the pub as a sports bar with the Former Players Association playing a big role.

Good news as Baz keeps doing the right things! wonder if they will call it the hornets nest!

Great news! It will be nice to have a local pub back up and running.

Not too sure what to think about the Carlsberg sponsorship.....presumably they were wanting some kind of exclusivity rights, or sponsorship?

Another part of his stated plan coming about and he thinks that the club might finance it. There has to be more money behind the man than is apparent.

It does say at the bottom of the piece that work may start on the SW corner by the end of the year. Slipped a bit from October but this is building work so should be expected.

Good to see this reopen! Will hopefully improve the pre-match atmosphere, it was something that needed doing certainly!

Good to see it reopening - and with Sarries here, should get extra revenue from those matches too!

Be interesting what they'll call it! Used to enjoy a few pre-match drinks in Harry's Bar

This will be nice to see. It looks awful at the moment and must give off a bad impression to the away fans.

Maybe we could get someone in the know to copyright "The Hornet's Nest" to protect it!!! Might also generate a bit of cash for us or the site lol.

If it is renamed, will it ever catch on, or will it forever be known as the Red Lion?

be a young old thing again Frenchie all the oldies will call it the red lion (when it was still a working pub) the younger ones who have only known it as a derelict building will call it the new name!

Its quite funny, when i first went to games the pub was open and buzzing before matches, but then it got quieter and then eventually closed. I would love to see it open again, but even for me it would be known as the red lion.

I vote it is called the Hornets' Nest and anyone from here gets one drink for no cost on every match day.

For once there is something repeatable on the WO comments board.

"I am 76 years old and now live in Spain and glad to hear the Red Lion is re-opening. My great-grandfather Daniel Roots was the Licensee in 1859 and my grandfather James Roots was born there. My late father-in-law, Tommy Harris who played for Watford, used to drink there and I used to deliver beer there as a drayman for Benskins. Good Luck.
    Ron Roots."

BB's map is still there, but few updates now. Maybe it would be good to advertise it again and get a few more far flung 'orns mapped up!

BB would you care to repost your map so some newer members can put themselves on it!
