Look at the lineup this year: http://www.rebellionfestivals.com/bands/ Amongst the bigger names, never seen: New Model Army, Exploited or Jello Biafra (seen his standup but not music). Apparently this is the final year of Chas & Dave playing together too. Anyone going?
I`ve got a friend who`s band has played it for a few years now , when I was back last year I could've went along with them to be a backstage ligger, hanging out with the likes of captain sensible and jimmy pursey.. ( whooo ! ) tales of old punk rockers acting like hippies put me off rather. Though I wouldn't mind seeing eddie and the hot rods perhaps. Ultimately the idea just doesn't seem to work for me, from what I hear - and Im happy to hear other versions - most of these bands just play what they played the way they played it back in the day....a kind of self-tribute act.. not very punk at all really.
Not very punk but a great weekend nonetheless. Saw Steve Ignorant interviewed there, he was talking about how he persuaded Penny Rimbaud to give his blessing to Ignorant performing Crass songs: "Imagine if I said you weren't allowed to read your favourite book again". I've seen so many bands there that I was too young to see first time round.
I'm there for the Friday and Saturday this year, since its been held in Blackpool i've only missed one of them and was at the last one in Morecambe when it was calle the Wasted Festival. For me its good for the bands to play the 'old classics' rather than any recent stuff which you might not had heard. Some of the main regrets in the past is when bands times clash so you have to choose which one to see? or if you get carried away talking in the pub and miss someone or for the ones later get taken drunk and miss them. Over the years i've met friends from over 30 years back as well as made some good friends/contacts in recent years, absolutely love it.
I've been to quite a few, liked it when it was in Morecambe as punks and skins took over the whole town for a few days. I'm not going this year but am hopeful Jello will do a tour while he's over, I'll go and see him if he plays London also looking forward to seeing the first Culture Shock gigs in over 20 years in October.
I kind of bumped into Pursey and co at a festival in Cornwall. They were moany bastards and acted more like suburban festival attendees than hippies in all fairness (not sure which is more detrimental to their old image). They weren't happy with all the Scottish guys playing the dance tent sauntering about off their tits
Not your era then ScotlandFanMuir, but probably a lot of music you listen too now is influenced from the Punk era whether in sound or attitude. Lets hope in 20 to 30 years time you are attending events with bands from your era(today).
