Why is it important who's a "real" and who is a "plastic" fan? My money is paying the players wages, if I buy a Swansea-shirt, in Copenhagen, aswell as if I was on the stands in some remote away game 15 years ago. This is an almost religious discussion. Because you've been supporting for 3 generations, you're NOT a better or more important fan. But you will for sure have good stories to tell... Long time fans ought to be happy for the club being successful, and attracting new fans! Instead I find long time fans "polishing-their-halo", flashing some kind of masochistic pride in being at some remote stadium long ago, in rain... YOU SHOULD GET YOUR ACTS TOGETHER AND WELCOME NEW FANS!
I am fine with new fans and welcone them. But a few annoying things that has come with our sucsess. .near impossible to get a ticket (worked most saturdays so never got a season) .atmosphere is suffering a bit (Wembley being the main one my mate was sining and a idiot told him to be quiet! WTF its not ****ing rugby) But the positives of our sucsess severely ought weigh the negatives.
I have no issues at all with newer fans - it's great that we are attracting them - it comes with success. Would people prefer us going back down the divisions and playing in front of 3000 crowds just so the chosen few can say "we are the real fans" ? A new fan is as important as someone who has supported the team for 50 years. When old fans die away, who would replace them ? New fans of course. All this plastics bull**** is nonsense. I've been a Swans fan since 1978, did that make me a plastic for the first few years ? Mikra - you are very welcome here and I'm happy to have you.
Stereo is bang on all supporters have to start supporting sometime and the hope is that once they start they will always be a supporter and that goes for supporters in south west wales and worldwide. I first saw the Swans in 1965 standing on the angle iron supporting the corrugated shheting at the back of the North Bank. So much has changed but not my support for the club. So welcome one and all.
The plastic will be gone if we drop out of the Premiership! The real fans will still be here, that's the difference.............
To a certain extent thats true , but the youngsters who are future seem to be more pre levant around the area ,how many Man ure etc shirts do you see being worn locally, Every one has to start some where and if it's taken until now so be it , the fan base has been growing slowly for a number of year now and long may it continue
Bony new fans are always welcome, that doesn't mean their plastic, but only time sifts the plastic weeds out!................
Phil's right plastic is not about new or old really - it's about staying Living in Canada I want the swans to stay in the top two divisions for ever - that way I get to see them every week - when they were in the 3rd and th - I had to rely on finding a Britich paper!
I don't consider myself a real fan. I'm not gonna watch the Swans if they drop out of PL, because I don't find 1. division that exciting. And I'm fine not considering myself real. I do however find the term "plastic" hilarious. Like there's a divine higher moral power deciding that it's bad to "shop" teams. When I watch the World Cup I obviously support my own country. But I also find a couple of teams I support as well, based on how they play at that given tournament. I don't see how that's "plastic". It's just more fun to watch a football game when you support one of the 2 teams.
The definition of plastics and there are many is not the fans who live far away and cant get to a match but the glory hunters that only turn up when you are winning....Man utd, barca, liverpool and the like will take some beating when it comes to plastic fans. we have a few thousand also as if we should slide down the leagues then you never see them again until we start the climb again....
See that's the attitude I don't get. Calling people demeaning words like "plastic" and "glory hunter" because they have a different mind set and a different way of watching football. Like I said, there's no divine book that states how you should watch football. It's up to yourself really.
What would you like to be called? it can't be "supporter " because you support the club through the bad as well as the bad times in both financial , vocal ,voluntary etc .A "Fan"well that would indicate that that you admire a team / style of play , and by your own admission even though we've played principally this style of football you'd have no interest in the Swans if they played at a lower level so the description "fan " must be discounted . I think glory hunter probably describes you the best unless of course you can come up with something more accurate .if you're putting money into the club directly or indirectly then your monies as good as anyones and gratefully received .
I can't help but wonder who on here has made the op feel the way he does to put up this thread in the 1st place? Also, as far as concerned if anyone on here lives far away but then goes to watch us when we play close by to them then that's allright with me. So if we get a Danish team in the Europa league then to be honest I would expect the op to at least make the game in Denmark. I see no problem with that at all As for defection of plastic..... The ones I class as plastic are people from Swansea but support the likes of Man Utd, Liverpool etc and then slag off their local team. People like that, ****ers the lot of them.
i am a plastic fan and proud of it (except today shambolic defence), i must reiterate my thanks to jackbastard who had me a ticket for the final but due to workcover laws i could not attend, **** happens unfortunately. next year, even if i have to write to huw to get 2 tickets, i will be there for Dilli
That's a good description Dai. You Sir just don't get what it really means to follow and support a football team. Therefore, you are both a plastic and a glory hunter. The real true fans of your club dilli, are the fans that go week in week out, through the good and bad times. The 3,000 if you like. Yet they don't feel the need to bang on about it. Then you have the 10,000 odd, who have always loved the Swans but for one reason or another couldn't attend during the dark days. ( Too many important things to do. ) Fair enough, but don't pretend to be anything else. Every club has them. And don't pretend to have been at a significant game when you weren't. ( For instance, we ( QPR ) had an attendance of 73,568 according to the eye witness accounts of that Trevor Sinclair wonder goal.) If you follow from afar, regardless of how often you used to go, then your a fan. No shame in that, you are what you are. Enjoy the rest of your season. You have been pound for pound the best side in the league. I really envy you.
Well, if you happen to draw FC København, I will keep on supporting my local club I like Swansea, heard of it when Mølby was here. But didn't symphatise until this season, in the beginning mainly because of ML - that I find logical. The reason for my post is: I've been told to get lost (or worse) when I said my opinion on subjects with the argument that I was not a true fan. Maybe I am, maybe not; but don't push strangers away ofr no reason - or just to keep your "status" as a true Jack.
