Anyone have any thoughts on their situation? I know we used to joke about the 'fake hoops' but for me, I feel sorry for the fans. Dodgy owners and potentially another points deduction. Its a real mess and a sad situation.
You may be completely right Col, but I feel sorry for any team in this position...and I am grateful for our owners, who do seem to care for our club even if they do make mistakes sone of them massive mistakes. They do care, and they are trying to look after us.
The EFL need to take responsibility for allowing more and more dodgy owners, so easily could have been (might be) us
Rick Parry, CEO of the EFL, has told the Parliamentary Culture and Sport Committee that two thirds of EFL clubs could go bust without a deal with the PL to get more TV money. With loads of PL clubs also in financial difficulty despite having their mouths stuffed with gold by various broadcasters and advertisers, they have zero incentive to share any more of the dosh. It’s like voluntary gavage, they are fattening themselves up for the kill. So the owners of the EFL clubs have to find ways to keep their clubs afloat, like ours, by subsidising losses. This is no way to run businesses. If the rules are enforced it doesn’t matter how rich and stupid your owners are, eventually you will be fined and docked points because the books don’t get close to balancing, unless you run a tiny, cheap organisation. Our target is to ‘only’ lose £13m a year. The crook who owns Reading, who has already destroyed two other clubs - one in China and one in Belgium - which no longer exist, has simply declined to waste any more money. Of course if he ever thought he wouldn’t have to pay for the privilege of owning an EFL club he shouldn’t have got in the game to begin with.
To me, the biggest issue is the ridiculous fees that are paid for players. Fancy spending 50 million on a dud player and having to do many times over. Players are paid way too much.
Personally, I do not like the disparaging remarks. It's a sad day when football clubs are pushed out of business as this affects a whole community, town or city. Plus we might find ourselves in their position next year if we get relegated.
Agree it's sad despite the banter, fake hoops etc. We're in no position to gloat as, according to many, we'll be in trouble if we drop. Having said that, if I could push the button that would make Millwall FC disappear - boom!!
Hope they go bust tbh. People will laugh if we do one day too just as Reading fans have at others. Feeling sorry for them won’t help. Replace them with a club with a stadium not miles from ****ing anything where it takes three days to get out and you feel like you’re watching football in a Costco. ****ers. @ELLERS to confirm
There's an accountant person who has charted the losses and profits for the last decade in the EFL Championship ... The top five ( bottom ) are ... 1. Reading - £215.4 million 2. Fulham - £222.2 million 3. Nott Forest - £197.2 million 4. Middlesbrough - £165.3 million 5. Stoke City - £164.3 million This is only for seasons in The Championship. please log in to view this image You can read the thread here if you wish ...
Look at what it cost some clubs (not Burnley) to be promoted aston villa 73 million fulham 57 million forest 46 million newcastle 46 million
I think I hate Reading more than any other club, with the obvious exception of Chelsea. They are the very definition of plastic. A truly dreadful stadium. I almost feel sorry for them, which is saying something.
There’s plenty of clubs I don’t like but I wouldn’t want to see any actually go bust. Except Chelsea.
I certainly do not want to see the small community clubs go bust...like Bury, Southend, Aldershot, Maccelsfoield Maidstone, Chester, Bolton...and Reading tbh. They have been made into something we dont like
No Col...it is a serious risk to us as a club... We took a bit of a risk 2 years ago, with Warburton...and we failed and now 2 years later...we the club are trying by selling all the family silver and naming rights and laying off staff...to stay in ffp levels...to give the players the chance of playing ourselves out of relegation...rather then be deducted 5 or 10 points that would guarantee it
Thats fair enough Beth, but did we really take a risk ? If we'd gambled 30 mill in that January window, then yes I'd agree but we spent a pittance in that window almost confirming we wouldn't get promoted. We cut our own throats with that approach. The biggest thing in that window was the fact Warburton begged them for a striker to make the difference and we didn't listen to his pleas. We got in no one of consequence and fell down the table. If you ask me it was that falling out that cost Warburton his job, and the club any hope if getting back into the Premier League. If you contrast it with what the Forest owner gave Cooper in that January transfer window it's chalk and cheese. Of course it doesn't guarantee that you'll get promoted, but don't tell me we took a huge gamble because we didn't !
