What Bobby Robson said about a football club “What is a club in any case? Not the buildings or the directors or the people who are paid to represent it. It’s not the television contracts, get-out clauses, marketing departments or executive boxes. “It’s the noise, the passion, the feeling of belonging, the pride in your city. It’s a small boy clambering up stadium steps for the very first time, gripping his father’s hand, gawping at that hallowed stretch of turf beneath him and, without being able to do a thing about it, falling in love.” My dad took me to Boothferry Park when I was about 6 or 7 and little did I realise at the time but a few years later when I started watching City he knew I would follow City til I die,I took my three kids to BP when they were all about 7 and they all love the Tigers, they might not go to as many games as me due to finance but they will always support City. Thats Hull City, nothing else will do.
Or the late great Bill Shankly "Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that."
Or the late great Kevin Keegan 'We are three games without defeat is another way of looking at it. But if we are honest we have taken two points from nine'
Would that it were so - but with the Sky/BT money & the Premier League management it is a multimillion pound business I'm afraid!
I don't need to understand him football IS NOT more important than life or death and it never will be.
I likewise love the sport, but I'm not keen on the tribal supporters who admit it ain't the football, it's the social occasion. Buying a ticket gets them a ticket, going makes them attendees - perhaps that is the way of it; I like the football.
Sorry but don't be ridiculous Tell a parent that has lost a child that football is more important. It's clearly bollocks of the highest order. The originator of that statement should of been vilified for making what is a very crass comment, instead it's passed off as something to hold up as showing how important a SPORT is. I love this sport as much as the next man but thats what it is a sport and some need to get some perspective. If Shankly had said that to me I would have told him to stop talking ****e you Scottish ****!!
"You can own a stadium, you can own the business that trades at the stadium, but you can no more own a football club than you can own a religion" - some guy on Twitter, yesterday.
Great piece by Sir Bobby but, as x said, they wouldn't know who he was so it would go straight over their heads. They wouldn't have a ****ing clue what he was talking about either, as supporters are irrelevant in their little insular world .
I f I remember correctly Shankly didn't say that as a direct quote but was himself quoting what an American Football coach had said with reference to gridiron to illustrate how important he thought it was. I certainly go along with the well known American football coach Vince Lombardi, at least as far as professional sports are concerned "Winning isn't the most important thing. It is the only thing."
Been at the games is more important to me then the score. One thing that kept me going was the desire to go to more games. I didnt worry about kicking the bucket but i did worry that i might not get to another game. Being determined to get to away games once again also cured my huge fear of traveling with out my mac nurse or female friend . Hull City almost certainly helped me to be here today and sure cured my fear of going out on my own after 5 years of not going out . So maybe it was more important them death I wont stop going to games while Hull City exist . Allam out
