Pxxi is just a shortening of the word Pakistani. Is calling someone a "Scot" offensive?

The problem with the P word, is that it's removed from being a shorter way of describing a person of Pakistani origin, and it is today used as a derogatory term to describe near enough all of the South Asia population. Try calling an Indian a P... and see if he laughs it off. You can achieve the same outcome in your scenario by simply saying "shop" without the racist preamble.
Not being able to move with the times is a sign of a degenerate, ignorance is not an excuse, especially when our government insist on thrusting this PC crap on us from every conceivable angle.

Yes and No. Technically it is short for Pakistan but most of the time the word is used against anyone brown and not just someone from Pakistan. Anyone ranging from Afganistan all the way through to Sri Lanka and India! Could just be big time ignorance on their part but that is no justification

At the same time though those words now have different meanings and many of us are stuck in the middle of this shift in meanings. The old people go on saying them anyway and we don't know what to say. The problem with 'Paki' is that it now is used as a term to describe not just Pakistanis but also the entire Asian population based solely upon the colour of their skin. I still find myself saying words like 'chinkies' in referral to the Chinese takeaway joint too. It's a shame that the vast majority of people who mean this innocently are construed to be racists.
I often find that black, oriental, Indian etc friends of mine don't care at all if you use these terms and often use it themselves, probably because of the mutual friendship and trust so it's just a pisstake, but saying the same things to a stranger would be extremely offensive and a real mark of disrespect.
Indians and Pakistanis hate each other though, like really detest each other, so calling an Indian a Pakistani never mind a well you know, would probably get you some funny looks at least.
I used to use the chinkie term all the time for the takaway food, got chatting to a girl on a chat program from Norwich years back now, i used to say just going for a chinkies, after about 5 months she said i wish you wouldnt say that, I work in one and I am Chinese, felt terrible and ever since then I say Chinese now, i also dont say the P word either, but that may be for the fact we dont have any shops run by pakistanis where i live, but tbh even if i still lived in Blyth i doubt i would either.
there is probably no perfect answer, some will get offended, others will laugh it off, and others may even get offended if you dont say some things as they are used to it and if they find you are uneasy because of where they are from, (just because you would normally say something that may offend them, if that makes any sense at all).

I wrote an essay on this in the final year of my degree. Came to the conclusion that there is no right or wrong where opinion and personal feelings come into it...
I come from Bishop Auckland, as a child (only going back 10/15 years here), I'd have gone to the Pshop to get sweets or the C..kies for a chinese. Then moving to Belfast (in my opinion a FAR more racist place) I became a lot more aware that whilst I didn't put any venom behind the words, a lot of people over here did. Because of that, I felt a bit uncomfortable using them anywhere.
There will always be 'taboo' language and situations where language is not appropriate...Blasphemy for example, could've led to you being burned at the stake a couple of hundred years ago, whilst now its not even watershed language...Having said that, it wouldn't be appropriate to go into a church and say 'Jesus Christ that Mary lass is a bit of a ride'.
