Think the Commonwealth Games is a bit of a joke really. The standard isn't up to much, definitely not world class all over, and it's more of a glory hunting exercise for the bigger, best funded countries. Look at the medal table and see the massive gap between Australia and England to the rest from India in 3rd place and down
I wouldn't call it a joke, any more than the Paralympics. It's a chance for athletes who normally might not even get a chance to compete. The Olympics lost something when they let the professionals in. It's good that athletes can make a living now but the Olympics is not the pinnacle of Serena Williams' career, whereas it was to the athlete who had to stay home, because Serena Williams got her place. And it's an opportunity for sports which aren't part of the Olympics to get greater coverage. Of course it's not world class when 2/3 of the world isn't there but it's still 1/3 of the world, 2.3 billion people, which is twice the size of Europe and the USA put together.
Its a higher standard in certain events than the european athletics for example. I would agree. however It is a olympics wannabe with far too many events for what it is as such several rich boy events are in there and the uk basically beats up on the rest.
The netball was one of the biggest draws and it was only in the final they said...this isn't an Olympic event! Surely they will rethink that!
well its about who hosts to get a sport in really. if golf can be in i fail to see why a pointless girls version of basketball can't be
The Olympics likes two types of sports, ones both Men and Women can both compete in, especially team events, problem being Netball is very much a women's sport. And two something new and 'cool' that can attract the 'kids' like surfing and skateboarding, netball isn't a 'cool' sport. Lets not forget that squash Still isn't a Olympic sport either.
I agree . It may not mean much to some of us , but it means the world to lots of them . Hope I am reading you right .
Yes, you read right. It's also deceptive to just look at the top of the medal table. The Olympics table also tends to be dominated by a handful of nations but that doesn't reveal how many of the smaller nations specialise in specific sports: the Kenyans in middle distance running, Jamaicans in sprinting, etc etc. Both of those were at the Commonwealth Games. So the fields might be smaller but the competitiveness isn't directly proportional to the number taking part.
Its good for the younger competitors as well, gives them experience of a big event without the pressure of the Olympics. Also from a British perspective, its great to see multiple options for times they become GB, someone who might usual miss out for GB (as there are limited numbers of entries allowed) might come to the Commonwealth and show what they can do.
Well that was worth the Punters turning up. Dude waves his hand high in the air then Khan knocks him out. Sure... stroke his ego...
I'm ****... but love it lol. The plate in my arm is actually useful .... if it hurts like hell I hit it wrong
