The rumour is that Ed Sheeran used to offer a quick one off the wrist in the men's toilet at Waterloo underground if he hadn't made enough at busking during the day for a Big Mac and fries.
Okay, bit of tragic namedropping, and a true story; Nigel Kennedy (one of my heroes ever since) was browsing my stall at Camden Market, in the eighties. Recognising him from Wogan, where he had been promoting his version of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, I said to him, “you’re that violinist aren’t you?” At which point my wife asked him, “have we seen you busking at Covent Garden?” He smiled and said, “I have done a bit of that, yeah”. Top bloke, Nige
Yeah mate, loads of times. Big punk venue in the 70’s, but I was last there to see an outfit called Captain Ska, just last year. My dad used to go there to watch skiffle bands, in the 50’s. Iconic venue, though the pillars holding up the roof in front of the stage get in the way a bit.
Been watching the start of punk in 76 earlier, pistols, dammed, and clash. Seems like everyone since has played there at some point
The Damned in the 70’s were one of the best live acts I’ve ever seen, for pure energy and “don’t give a ****” rock n roll attitude. They tend to get less credit as an early punk act than the likes of The Clash or The Pistols, but live they knocked spots off everyone imo. Stranglers were ****ing excellent live too.
The "all weather girls" who had a hit with "it's raining men" started out as a band called "two tons of fun" Sorry that's the best I've got!!!!
Saw them live at the Hammersmith Odeon, around 82/83. They certainly were fun (big girls too). Started out as gospel singers, and it showed - they could belt em out just like they were in Church.
The Weather Girls are an American musical duo formed in San Francisco, California in 1977 as Two Tons O' Fun, the duo, consisting of singers Izora Armstead and Martha Wash, originally served as Sylvester's backup singers. Later changing their name to The Two Tons and finally The Weather Girls, the duo reached their peak in popularity in 1982 with the international hit "It's Raining Men", which sold over 6 million copies worldwide and was included the following year in their album Success.[4][5] The duo disbanded in 1988; however, Armstead premiered a new version of The Weather Girls in 1990, together with her daughter Dynelle Rhodes. Following Armstead's death in 2004, the duo has no original members left. The group consist now of Dynelle Rhodes and Dorrey Lynn Lyles.
Perhaps I shouldn't mention it, but I always liked that tune. Now where did I put my high heels and handbag!
