That was exactly my first thought. It was fairly obvious from about October-November we were on the slide, and utter incompetence not to realise it.

How are the owners feeling about their job going forwards?

"That was a pretty scary first year for the Gao family. They were outstanding throughout the process, they believed in our ability to stay in the Premier League. Investment....is about letting us operate within our means. We are building a sustainable business. We want to reinvest player trading into the club. We are striving to grow our commercial base. We will create a bigger footprint in China which will feed back into the club. They've been supportive, they've allowed the operational aspects to work within it's means"
