Okay folks, here it is, I have had a look around and the words Gypo and Pikie or variations of are deemed racist slurs. So in the interest of peace and harmony can we stop using these words to describe folk from Swansea. By virtue of the fact some of them are offended by being called such means they acknowledge their past history. Apparently "Taff" is also a racist slur! All joking aside, if the terms are used in a derogatory context they are indeed deemed racist. Again it is all about context with some if not all these words. I welcome all thoughts on this issue and how we deal with offending comments, our self regulation has by and large worked but we should remember some folks are more sensitive than others.
I would think "peg seller" is inflammatory as it implies someone is in work. ITI this one is more collective.
Chico! Will you be imposing a similar position to racist terms on your own board? Will you also be taking a similar stance toward sexist and homophobic language also?
To be honest mate I'm seriousley considering stepping down because things just aren't improving on our board.
Chico, no worries. The issue is not confined to you guys. If anything racist is found then it has to be dealt with. It is a criminal offence to make racist statements and folks can be prosecuted for it, even the most innocuous comment can be deemed racist. It is a minefield and best to err on the side of caution. Words like Gypo, Pikie, Paki, Ting Tong can be used between friends and not be deemed racist. As I have said previously it is the context in which they were used. A prime example is a Rangers board member calling his friend a Paki. Someone overheard this and reported it to the police. The recipient of the slur said it was just banter and he often called the other guy an English bastard. The board member was still prosecuted! NJ has used Ting Tong (a derogatory term in itself) specifically against our Malysian owner thus making it a racist comment. If he wasn't such a bigot where Cardiff was concerned I don't think his comments would be looked at twice, the two combined show the world what he is.
That's a fair comment taff. I wasn't online at the time he wrote it, but I will make it clear to them that they are not to use the term, and that you have requested gypo to not be used toward us.
Listen! The reason I raised the question is that a small number of us won't be affected by such draconian measures, but your board will be heavilly affected if we go down this route. I genuinely cannot understand why you haven't already given up fella, given recent personal events. It ain't worth Jack. (hope that last word wasn't viewed as derogatory)
You racist bast.......Meh. Lol. Tbh, I did enjoy it. I'm a moderator on a car club I'm in and is great. Your the first person people come to for help, and it also remains civil. Here though, whole different story. I've been determined to sorry it, and have had to be strict at times, but even that hasn't worked. Running out of ideas tbh.
Chico, you can always come on this board for a bit of peace and sanity mate, we always welcome good posters.
Where is the line drawn on racism? It seems you can't call an Italian an eytie, but you can call an Australian an aussie.
Put me in charge of discipline!!!!!! *Caution: I fantasise about world domination, survivors not guaranteed.
Hampshire, the line is whether it is a derogatory comment or not. Which is a problem when you do not know individuals. The written word is a wonderful thing but most here can recognise derogatory racist comments. Personally I did not class pikie or gypo as racist but criminal charges have been prosecuted successfully which means those two words and forms of those words are racist in themselves. As I wrote earlier "Taff" is also classed as a racist slur but I have never had a problem with people calling me Taff. Been called a taff bastard loads of times when messing around with mates and called them Irish, Jock and English twats in return, all good banter in our view. Clearly calling Swans gypo or pikie is derogatory and in the eyes of the law overtly racist and given the current pc environment it would likely lead to prosecution. Self regulation has worked hear but now we are aware these 2 words are deemed racist I suggest we no longer tolerate them on the board. This also protects the guys who use those words as I would hate them to be prosecuted for writing something in anger given some of the crap NJ, Dilli and KJ come out with.
i see this episode for what it is, point scoring and trying to get the other lot in trouble. problem is, some members on your board, go far beyond what could be considered banter - some seem to enjoy venting anger towards us, and if no cardiff members go on there for a while, then they turn to their own members and hound them off the board. at times i'm surprised you have so many members prepared to sift through all their crap, and i feel sorry for the majority who are a decent bunch. casual racism, terms like ting tong and the like, and a string of offences that go against your very own rules, are par for the course on your board.
