In 2 weeks time the race starts on a new championship season. Forget the olympics, this is a truly gruelling race over 46 long games but the rewards are significant with an estimated 90m prize fund if your club makes it to the premier league. With one of Saints star players showing his intentions to leave before a ball is kicked and the expected revenue of that sale of Chamberlain could range from 5m to 12m with add ons would you re-invest as much as possible. If you were Nicola, would you pay upto 4m for a quality championship player for example Nicky Maynard in a gamble to get your hands on that prize. Would you rather the money was spent on other areas in the club and one or two modest decent additions brought in. The Southampton 5 year plan still has time to run so do you see how we get on or do we gamble? You decide If your answer is gamble -then on who and how much would you be prepared to pay?
Balance is everything. We have a proper team with quality throughout and who play for each other. Anyone we buy must fit in and not be disruptive, so I would go for some speculation but not a gamble. Don't think NC will throw all the money at the team this season as he is trying to build the club throughout. The situation in the January window may be different if we are high flying or really struggling, though spending at that time can be difficult. As for the players required, I will leave that to you guys as I have little knowledge of lots of players discussed.
it is a difficult decision, heard we are being linked again with Ings of Bournemouth, young, promising but unproven at championship level - would not cost the earth but are we better off spending more on a proven goal scorer. if Chamberlain goes which seems likely, i too would like to see a large sum immediately re-invested in players to strengthen for this year, ultimately someone with pace and i think we are only one big player away from a very good squad
I think if he does go, we need to get a pacey right winger in, as pace is one thing we're lacking atm.
go for the promotion and spend now. we only have 3 years left to get promoted and everyone knows how difficult it is to get promoted from the championship. why settle in when we can challenge straight away?
