"The Anfield Iron" - one of the game`s true hard men, a great footballer and a real character, truly sorry at his passing (no pun intended)
Part of the school of hard basta*ds.....hated playing against him...but would have loved for him to be in our side. RIP lad......just dont break God's legs in a 50/50. Straight red up there mate.....
One of my favourite, opposition hardmen, along with Jimmy Scoular and Chopper Harris. And while his reputation, away from Liverpool, is his 'Hardman' image, he was also a terrific player. please log in to view this image
I'm sure there was blame on all sides for this. However, Thatcher's Britain at that time were treating the working class with utter contempt, and football was seen as the game of the working classes at the time..
Him vs Barton on the pitch that would have been interesting ! Billy bremner, dave mckay, Gary bennet vs Speedie on youtube is my favourite.
The first time Kevin Ball was due to face Wimbledon's Vinnie Jones rather underlines your point. Jones was at the top of his hard man reputation at the time and us fans and the North East Press were bigging up the meeting. When reporters asked Jones how he felt about the prospect he was reported as saying that he'd never heard of Kevin Ball. It didn't take long for him to get acquainted with Kevin after he clattered him inside of 90 seconds. Keven was man marking him, (in every sense), and the ref seemed bemused at it all and just about left them to sort it out. After a short few minutes Vinnie just avoided getting a pass. He ducked it 100% leaving The Dons tp play with ten men.
