Former Pompey centre back Steve Aizlewood has sadly passed away at the age of 60 following a short battle with illness.

The Welshman was signed from Newport in 1979 and made 201 appearances in four years for the Blues, being a key part of the promotion winning sides of 1980 and 1983.

I remember seeing him play - big powerful centre back, and a very talented player.

Very sad. It seems only a short while ago I was sat in my kitchen with him sharing a crate of lager at a party at my house. He never used to smile much although he did, when Mark Hately walked in to the kitchen accompanied by two stunning blondes!.Halcian days indeed. RIP Steve.

In 1980 I was at Padnell Middle School in Cowplain. We reached the district Cup Final. I had a blinder, scoring twice, but we lost 4-3 to 'Front Lawn" if memory serves. Two Pompey players were there to present the cup. I can't swear to it but I'm sure Steve was one of them.
One of them {I cant remember which one} congratulated me on my two goals and said "the better team lost"

RIP Steve. He was a good player. Very loyal to his hometown club, Newport County. When things were really tough for them.
