News breaking that David Bowie has sadly passed away following an 18 month battle against cancer. Grew up listening to Bowie as he was my uncles favourite performer. Sad times http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-3393470/David-Bowie-dies-18-month-battle-cancer.html
Sad news indeed.....just saw your post on FB mate. Like you, grew up with listening to Bowie and saw him once in London on the glass spider tour.
Another iconic legend of music (and in this case, every cliché actually applies) departs. This man shaped music for decades, massive shock for anyone who grew up listening to it. My and my mate used to listen to Diamond Dogs (and a bit of Led Zep) night after night in my early teens....
He was an acquired taste I thought, loved some of it, disliked some.. no doubting his star quality though. Shame.. RIP DB.
Bowie was totally unique, like him or loathe him he was very very special. From the 60's he's appealed to every generation right up to now. His latest album seems haunting - did he plan it right to the end ? - typical of Bowie that will keep us guessing.
Another sad loss from the era of music that got me hooked on it in the first place. Someone else who was totally unique and irreplaceable is now gone RIP David Jones
Sadly the big c has taken another icon, along with more and more folk being taken by the horrible Disease. R-I-P David Bowie
Absolutely irreplaceable – I could never call myself a massive fan, but I could appreciate his genius. I just hope Jeff Lynne and Richard Tandy can hang on in there until June – I bought tickets to see ELO in Birmingham on 23rd !!!
the most creative musician of the last forty years- a true true great, the first time I saw him at the colston hall on the Ziggy stardust tour, I knew I"d seen something very special, and still making music that was relevant at the very last, rip, the prettiest star.
I'm seeing them on Friday 22nd at the O2...with 'special guests' Am hoping that both will still be around for many years to come and that the special guests are someone like Tom Petty or Roy Wood, although the latter is probably unlikely.
I love Jeff Lynne, I've just bought his latest ELO cd disc before Christmas, ' Alone in the universe' it's great, I hope you all have a great time at his show..
Cheers Wiz - yes I have heard it, but I am currently listening to Eldorado - I'd forgotten how good that LP is and a mate gave me a copy CD last week (my old tape album copy bit the dust a long time ago!) Back to Bowie - as I said I wasn't a massive fan, but 3 songs in particular I do really love (and do sing/play if bribed with enough alcohol at parties and a guitar is shoved into my hand!); Space Oddity, Ziggy Stardust and Starman.
Cheers Wiz A hero of mine since I first heard Showdown..... Also have the album which I think is more Jeff Lynne than classic ELO sound, but very listenable
This news shook me and I have to say that I drove along St.John's Lane today with tears in my eyes. As a teenager in the 60s there was Rock 'n Roll at the start with Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent et al......then the British replies in Billy Fury moving into the Rolling Stones, Beatles etc and the eye-opening exposure to American Blues and R'nB culminating in Detroit Motown and Stax, Atlantic and Philly. And then, right at the end of the 60s, along came this Eastender David Jones and his shattering creations of Ziggy and the Space Oddity. A loss on a par with Lennon and Elvis. David Bowie. R.I.P.
