Devastating news. A giant of the game who will never be forgotten by fans of Spurs, Hearts, or Derby.

I'm old enough to remember him playing, when your a kid you support your own team but there are stand out players in other teams and Dave Makay was certainly one of those.

A true legend of English football

    RIP.<rose>

    I thought he was indestructible!

    Thanks Dave.

  6. He was slightly before my time, but his legend at Spurs was written as brightly as that of any of our greats. Oh, how we have needed his spirit and his leadership since the days he hung up his boots! The term "legend" is bandied about far too glibly, but his is one of the names against which such a term can be held up as a true yardstick.

    RIP.

I consider myself very fortunate to have seen Dave Mackay in a Spurs shirt. Undoubtedly one of our all time greats, he had the heart of a lion. They don't make them like Mackay any more.

    RIP Big Man.

Dave Mackay. The greatest player I ever saw.
I can see him now in his first game for Spurs in 1959.Sheer genius. He had fantastic ball control, great passer of a ball and a great tackler. Not forgetting his wonderful goals.
Survived two broken legs to go on to win the FA Cup for us in 1967 but it had slowed him down a lot.We let him go to Derby County......and he went on to help Cloughie win the League.
Where can you find another like him......?
    Thanks for the memories Dave.

One of the mainstays of the double side. I was also lucky enough to see him play many times. I suppose he was what you'd call nowadays, a D.M. But he also had great skill. Terrific passer of the ball.

As Smithy has alluded to, very few were stupid enough to mess with Mr Mackay.

the greatest MF player I ever witnessed grace football and without doubt the best ever Spurs skipper

    A brief true story
Myself and a couple of mates used to spend Friday nights on the town and one Friday we finished off in a small night club in Bowes Green road
All spurs nuts from birth we were shocked to see Dave sitting at the bar with a drink in hand

I went to the bar to get the drinks in and Dave pulled me over and said "your shocked to see me the night before a game, this is Billy Nicks phone number and he will confirm he knows both the time and where Iam"
Dave whent on to explain that he had early nights six days a week but simply could not sleep the night before a game being too pumped up, with that brilliant smile he claimed he could hear the pipes and drums right up to kick off

The comment on pipes and drums no doubt his wee joke but we were all at the game on the Saturday and as usual a win with Dave MOTM

Saint Peter will have been shocked to hear those pipes and drums as Dave appeared at the golden gates RIP Dave

    Condolences to his family.

But is he really dead ?? Only physically.
That the man is revered over 50 years past his finest hours, and both on/off
pitch epitomised what the club we support was and always should be, means he is eternal.

Condolences to his family and friends.

Unfortunately I wasn't around in his playing days but I've only ever heard/ read/ seen clips of incredible things and what a legend he is. A truly fantastic servant and player to our club. RIP Dave.

Surprising news as 80 is no age these days.

He won the Scottish title with Hearts and the English title with Spurs, then more remarkably, with Derby as manager, albeit with Clough's team that he had joined as a player in the Second Division.

Recognised as the hard man in an era of hard men despite being only 5'7" tall!

Dave hated that picture believing it sent the wrong message of him as a player in particular as it was on show in the legends bar
Was at the game and one of the notable incidents was the ref standing back and letting Dave deal with Bremner and only stepping in when Dave put Bremner back on his feet
